  • This summer we sat down with our Thriving Neighborhoods Fund (TNF) Cohort members for a Mid-Year Check In and today’s quote speaks to the impact of TNF from the prospective of Detroit Heals Detroit. What is Detroit Heals Detroit?: Mission Detroit Heals Detroit exists to foster healing justice for Detroit youth in which they are able to transform their pain into power. With a goal to combat trauma, we use healing centered engagement to share our greatest vulnerabilities with the rest of the world while simultaneously working to dismantle oppressive systems for marginalized Detroit youth.
Vision Our organization was created by Detroit youth for Detroit youth, between the ages of 12-21, who have been walking and developing in a world that has sought to silence their pain. Exposure to trauma has a profound impact on cognitive development and academic outcomes and our specific students in Detroit seem to wake up to trauma like its breakfast. We understand that Detroit youth face more challenges than any individual person can remedy so our goal is to help each other heal from the trauma together. We need a voice and access to share our greatest vulnerabilities with the rest of the world, truly giving our trauma a purpose.

  • Lieutenant Governor Garlin Gilchrist has been a long-time friend and co-conspirator in #GoodTrouble with us here at SCP! He recently visited us at our SCP Community Center in Detroit to meet with our CEO, Dr. Chanel Hampton, to dig into some local and national efforts on the horizon. From investing in education to fostering civil and political engagement to our duty to our community—we continue to be hopeful and inspired. Together, we’re helping share a brighter future for our young people, educators, business owners, neighbors, and greater community! Thank you for your unwavering support and leadership over the years, Lieutenant Governor! #Education #CommunityImpact #Leadership #Detroit #Michigan

  • This summer we sat down with our Thriving Neighborhoods Fund (TNF) Cohort members for a Mid-Year Check In and the quote pulled, speaks to the impact of TNF from the prospective of Detroit Hives. What is Detroit Hives?: At the heart of it, the work of Detroit Hives can be condensed down to a simple concept: They transform vacant Detroit lots into urban bee farms. The benefit is threefold: -Conservation -Education -Revitalization #communityimpact #doingthework

  • Another convening is in the books with our Kanada Fellows! Month 3 was all about setting ourselves up to assess where we are. We dug deep into discussion and activities, grounding ourselves in reflective questions such as… ✅What are my core values? ✅What are my passions and interests? ✅What does my ideal future look like? ✅ What is my personal vision statement? This reflective convening is setting our Kanada Fellows up for an exercise in self-awareness and getting paired with their Kanada Executive Coaches! Here’s to growing, learning, and leading together! #KanadaFellows #PassionGrowth #RootedInPurpose #ForgeYourFrontier #LeadershipDevelopment #BlackLeadership

Last week was our final week of summer programming with our amazing students at David Ellis Academy -West, our program team could not let the summer end, without a few words of encouragement as our kiddos head into the rest of summer and fall! We are wishing our rising stars continued growth, curiosity, love for their communities and open minds to always learn. JOURNi #summerfun #youthprograms #education #community

  • Our young people are the next generation of leaders, business owners, and beyond! This summer, our students stepped into the world of entrepreneurship with the Enterprising Youth Program with SCP and @JOURNi at David Ellis Academy- West! Over six weeks, they crafted innovative business models, sourced their products, and honed their market strategies. Here’s a glimpse into what they’ve accomplished: Business Creation: From brainstorming to executing, our students have developed their own business models. They’ve learned the ins and outs of revenue, profit, and loss. Shop Setup: On the big day, students create eye-catching signage, craft compelling advertisements, and prepare price lists. They set up their very own shop, managing everything from customer interactions to financial transactions. Real-World Experience: At their student-led shop, they handle all operations, including distributing money, explaining product details, and ensuring a smooth shopping experience. Debrief & Reflect: After the event, the students analyze their results, assess what worked, what didn’t, and brainstorm improvements for the future. This reflection is key to their growth and learning. Join us in celebrating their achievements and hard work! Their dedication and entrepreneurial spirit are truly inspiring. #EnterprisingYouth #FutureLeaders #StudentEntrepreneurs #SummerProgram #BusinessSkills #YouthEmpowerment
