I’ve been reflecting on how work is evolving and the possible implications. It’s frustrating when we stick to old ways just because “that’s how it’s always been done,” especially when those ways perpetuate discriminatory systems. Consider this: women have only been able to get a business loan without a male co-signer for 36 years. The 9-5 workday was introduced in 1926 when only about 20% of the “workforce” was women, essentially ignoring their unpaid household labor. As work changes, I hope we all scrutinize and challenge these arbitrary systems.

What if everyone quit corporate? It was just made up anyway, why can’t we make up a new way of working? Embracing the principles of crafting a portfolio career would usher in a workforce defined by flexibility, diversity, autonomy, and resilience. It would be a move towards a more dynamic and adaptable work model - some might even call it ‘Modern’.

The pandemic sparked a shift in my relationship with work. As an elder Millennial, I once tied my self-worth to corporate success, seeing it as validation. However, I realized that companies never truly valued me as an individual. They didn't care about my identity as a single mother, introvert, or neurodivergent person. The corporate grind is a facade, and I'm advocating for a revolution in how we perceive work. Now, I no longer base my self-worth on my job or career. I refuse to let companies infringe on my time or boundaries. Recognizing that I'm the asset generating profits, my confidence has soared. While corporate work offered stability, I've discovered true safety lies in creating it for myself. By embracing challenges, diversifying my income, and taking risks, I've found more security than ever before.

61% of employees now rank personal freedoms to work when, where, and how best suits them as a top priority according to a Gallup Study. Job stability, once the cornerstone of employment, now holds less sway with only 53% of respondents prioritizing it. This shift in priorities is unsurprising when the possibility of layoffs is wielded like a sharp threat by companies to keep employees from seeking a better way to work.
