Director of Community Action at Strong Towns, working to assist people in taking incremental actions to make their communities stronger.

I am excited to share the Strong Towns member exclusive livestream. Charles Marohn, Alli Thurmond Quinlan, AIA RLA, and Eric Kronberg will be talking about housing and sharing how cities can be Housing-Ready. Learn more about six things every city has the power to do to expand housing opportunities. None of these require new resources, just shifts in how we talk and think about housing. If housing is important to you join us. If you are not a Strong Towns member, take this opportunity to join the movement and support more work like this. https://lnkd.in/eMZqje84

  • Anyone can nominate their town for the Strongest Town Competition. If you can answer any of the questions below, you should fill out the link in our bio by Feb 23rd for your chance to win! 1. What does communication between elected officials and residents look like in your town? 2. What’s one example of a time that people in your city observed a struggle that some residents were having and took swift, ideally low-cost action to address that struggle? 3. What about your town inspires you to keep working to make it stronger? What sets your town apart as truly special?

  • Too many streets are designed for high speeds rather than for safety. As a result, everyone is at risk: people biking, people walking, and — yes — people driving, too. In some places, this problem is so extreme that it leads to drag racing and stunt driving, turning local streets into dangerous speedways. This reckless behavior is an extreme consequence of over-engineered roads that prioritize speed over safety. But let’s be serious: If people are drag racing on your streets, your streets are designed wrong. Read more on strongtowns.org: https://buff.ly/431AUI6

  • In a strong town, the local government is transparent about its accounting practices. This means that city officials need to offer residents clear, accurate and accessible information about local finances. It also extends to the stewardship of money itself: The more transparent and open the city’s finances, the more accountability there is, as both officials and residents can clearly see whether public spending is helping or hurting the city. That way, they can adjust their spending to build true resilience and prosperity for the community. To see an example of how non-transparent local accounting can harm cities, check out "Talk Is Cheap: How One City Hid Its True Intentions in the Fine Print" by Michel Durand-Wood, reposted from his site "Dear Winnipeg" onto strongtowns.org: https://buff.ly/3AqFl31

    • At the top of the image is a photo of stacks of papers with binder clips, labeled "City budgets." The bottom of the image is labeled "Regular citizens" with a screenshot of a series of messages that read "i ain't reading all that. i'm happy for u tho. or sorry that happened."
  • Share this with your city council to make sure your city is housing ready. Six policies will make your town housing-ready, and can be implemented on a local level. That means your place doesn’t have to wait for help from above to fight back against the housing crisis. Those six policies are: 1. Allow single-family home conversion to duplex or triplex, by right. 2. Permit backyard cottages in all residential zones. 3. Legalize starter homes in all residential zones. 4. Eliminate minimum lot size requirements in existing neighborhoods. 5. Repeal parking mandates for housing. 6. Streamline the approval process.

    • Text message exchange over a photo of a zoomed-in approval checkbox. Texts read "We streamlined the approval process for housing, right? If so, maybe we ARE Housing Ready. (Or, almost.) strongtowns.org/housingready"
  • Get the tools you need to take action and make your community more economically resilient during the Spring 2025 Local-Motive Tour! Learn from the unsung heroes of the Strong Towns movement who are leaders in their cities and towns. Live sessions run from March 20 through April 24, 2025, every Thursday from 12-1pm Central. Ticket price includes lifetime access to the session recording.

    • Graphic of a bulletin board with a map, paper, tickets, and photos pinned and taped. Text reads "Learn online from leaders based in these cities. Get tickets at strongtowns.org/localmotive"
