    Are you SECURE 2.0 ready? SECURE 2.0 has sweeping impacts across the payroll and 401(k) landscapes. The IRS just released guidance for SECURE 2.0's 401(k) match on student loan payments provision! For those not familiar, this provision of SECURE 2.0 allows for employees making student loan contributions to have those funds become eligible for 401(k) matching contributions in lieu of 401(k) contributions. It's worth noting that this does not change the matching calculations. This provision from a matching standpoint would treat student loan payments as if they were deferrals. Thus, if employees are receiving the maximum matching contribution through their deferrals, this would have no impact on those employees. These matching contributions would vest just the same as matching contributions on deferrals and are effectively treated the same. Some of the key provisions are: ✔️ This provision must exist in your 401(k) plan document. It is not mandatory to participate. ✔️ Employee's must be eligible for matching contributions to receive matching contributions. ✔️ Employee's making qualified education loan payments must also certify annually to their employer that the payment has been made on the loan. ✔️ Plan's offering student loan matching contributions are also entitled to special relief from non discrimination testing requirements. ✔️ Applies for plan years beginning on or after 12/31/2024.
