"The summer I spent doing SAF's Into the Fields internship back in 2018 completely and totally changed my life. I owe SAF for the systems-level analysis of the world I have developed since then, both in the ITF internship and in the past four years of working with the organization full-time as their Grassroots Organizer. I have met people whose hearts are swollen with passion for changing the world for the better. These people are among the best of us, and I am blessed to have met and worked directly with many of them. The farmworker community is both uniquely persecuted and uniquely crazily resilient. I am humbled and grateful to have met so many workers over the years who have opened my eyes and inspired me to continue to fight for dignified living and working conditions for all. As I transition into a career in nursing and later midwifery, I take with me the belief that every person is capable of making a difference in someone's life, as well as the belief that no one should ever have to worry if they will make it through the day due to systemic inequities that threaten their very lives. I owe SAF for so much. Thank you, thank you, thank you. Once a Safista, always a Safista." - Victoria Nwankudu

Uniting for just living and working conditions for farmworkers and their families
About us
Student Action with Farmworkers is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization whose mission is to bring students and farmworkers together to learn about each other’s lives, share resources and skills, improve conditions for farmworkers, and build diverse coalitions working for social change. SAF works with farmworkers, students, and advocates in the Southeast and nationwide to create a more just agricultural system. Since 1992, we have engaged thousands of students, farmworker youth, and community members in the farmworker movement. We envision a world where students and community members actively work together to promote justice in the agricultural system and health and well-being for all farmworkers and their families. We envision communities where there is greater interaction, communication, and understanding among people of different backgrounds. We envision a world in which farmworkers are empowered to take leadership in the farmworker justice movement and their local communities. We envision a world where consumers will be more aware of where their food comes from, who grows it, harvests it, and packages it, and the conditions of its production.

We love hearing from SAFistas about their experiences! Lea, SAF alumna ITF '23, shares about hers below:
As the new class of SAFistas are around the halfway mark of their internships for the summer, I would like to share my experience. I was able to intern with Good Samaritan Clinic in Burke County, North Carolina for 3 months. As rural health interns, my intern partner Marbella Hernandez Alvaro and I enrolled hundreds of seasonal and migrant farmworkers in the North Carolina Farmworker Health Program. By doing so, they gained access to low cost primary and dental healthcare. We visited fields and handed out bags of toiletries to farmworkers. We also provided transportation for farmworkers and their family members to their dental and primary care appointments. Alongside 24 other SAFistas, I learned about the history and curent state of farmworkers in North Carolina , the Southeast, and America. We traveled to farmworker communities across the state to engage in their stories of living here and abroad. We also attended training sessions to build our skills in data entry, interpretation m, and more as interns and future professionals . Two trainings particularly stood out to me. The first training was the three-day North Carolina Farmworker Health Program's June Outreach Orientation in Raleigh, North Carolina. There I learned about common health risks that Carolinian farmworkers face, interpersonal skills required for farmworker outreach work, and the growing demographic of Haitian farmworkers along the Eastern coast of the Carolinas. Secondly, in July 2023 I participated in the Interpretation for Social Justice workshop organized by the tilde Education Fund. During that weekend I strengthened my simultaneous and consecutive English & Spanish interpretation skills. Thanks to Student Action with Farmworkers the 2023 SAFistas partnered with organizations who are committed to the farmworker rights movement. Thank you to everyone who contributed to my summer with SAF! #FarmworkerRights #RuralHealth #SAF #IntotheFields #SAFAlumni
