"Automatic Textbook Billing - Limited choice, uncertain savings" Bravo, Elizabeth Ridlington and Dan Xie for this report, which shines a spotlight on the inherent conflicts when colleges and universities grant monopoly rights to bookstores in exchange for a share of the proceeds. With escalating revenue share rates if the contracts include more profitable, Inclusive Access arrangement i.e. when students pay more, it is clear that these contracts are designed to protect the industry incumbents, not students' best interests. "While supporters of automatic textbook billing, also known as “inclusive access” and by various brand names, argue that the arrangement can provide cost savings and more convenient access to course materials for students, a review of contracts between schools, bookstores and publishers shows that the system may also keep students locked into an uncompetitive textbook market and may limit the spread of free open educational resources." https://lnkd.in/ePfN9nNF Not mentioned in the report: the anti-competitive clauses contained in many of these contracts, preventing faculty being made aware of more affordable options for their students. e.g.: “Institution shall not accept advertising or permit tabling or other promotional activities by any seller of college course materials and/or course supplies other than the Bookstore at any event sponsored by Institution or located on Institution’s campus.”; or: "Barnes & Noble College shall be the exclusive retail (e-commerce) entity permitted to either place a link on the LMS or accept sales directly from Institution students and/or as part of a course charge through the LMS and (ii) Institution shall prohibit all third parties, including but not limited to publishers and sellers of textbooks and course materials, from placing direct links within the LMS or soliciting sales directly from Institution students and faculty through the LMS. Finally, in the event any such third parties place a link on the LMS permitting direct sales of textbooks or course materials to Institution students, Institution shall remove and disable such links and retail functionality.” Barnes & Noble College Booksellers, LLC contract with Bladen Community College, 4.6.2022 https://lnkd.in/eFT-SYcJ

Our team organizes campaigns across the country getting students involved and trains them to run campaigns that make an impact in the community, at the local, state, or federal levels, and wherever it will make the greatest impact. The Student PIRGs is hiring more organizers to help us make a difference on some of the top issues facing our generation. 1) We want democracy to work for everybody, not just Super PACs — so we’re working to overturn Citizens United and reclaim democracy for the people. 2) We want to save the bees, so we are working to ban bee killing pesticides so we can continue to enjoy coffee, chocolate, and more! 3) We want clean energy, so we are working to get college campuses across the country to commit to 100% renewable energy And much more! Here are some things to know about the job: First, our organizers don’t spend a lot of time sitting behind a desk! Most of your time will be spent out in the field creating partnerships and moving campaigns forward. Second, you’ll also learn from some of the best organizers in the country — people who have been doing this work for 30+ years. Finally, you leave behind a group of students that can sustain and grow this work in years to come. We’re hiring organizers to work on college campuses in California, New Jersey, Massachusetts, Oregon, and other states. If you have the passion and the drive it takes to fuel the power of student activism, win positive change, and build for even more victories in the future, consider a job with us.

Highlights from our year of advocacy in town councils, county meetings, state legislatures, administrative departments, Congress, the White House, and more. Sometimes you get so into the work that you forget how much work you've actually done, and writing this update was definitely one of those moments. Such an privilege to support the incredible leaders of Student PIRGs clubs and chapters across the country in their ongoing work to elevate the voices of young people in their communities.

On February 23rd, we sent a letter from 54 student organizations and more than 350 individual students urging the Department of Education to continue with its efforts to curb automatic textbook billing, including changing the Cash Management rule to make “Inclusive Access” programs “opt-in” for students. Together, we represented student voices across more than 20 states and 76 institutions. Read the letter here:

This week, 18 Student PIRG leaders from 12 states traveled to Washington DC to attend the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA)'s convening of youth environmental organizations. Students got training from our Political Director, attended the youth convening to learn about federal opportunities, network with other groups, and promote our environmental platform, and then we co-hosted a reception for our partners at Relist Wolves and the League of Conservation Voters. And, we attended a climate rally at the Capitol with our partners from the Climate Action Campaign. If you want to get involved on the campaigns: https://lnkd.in/gEhaU3bZ
