Happy Election Day! At Student Leadership Network, our students understand the importance of civic engagement. In 2023, four Student Leadership Network students from The Young Women’s Leadership Schools (TYWLS) and CollegeBound Initiative (CBI) schools across NYC were featured in the New York City Campaign Finance Board and the Bronx Times for their work as NYC Votes Youth Ambassadors! As NYC Votes Youth Ambassadors, students learned about voting history, hosted “Get Out the Vote” events, and shared non-partisan voting information in various languages. In a world where the need for high-quality STEM education is ever-increasing, school principals are looking towards innovative ways to recruit teachers to provide their students with a strong STEM education. Allison Persad, Principal of The Young Women’s Leadership School (TYWLS) of Astoria shared her methods for doing so at TYWLS Astoria in a recent article by Education Week. “What I did is I had a former student who went into the world of journalism and media. She’s actually been nominated for Emmy [awards], and I’ve stayed in touch with her over the years. She’s now decided she wants a more regular job as she’s settling into marriage and possibly children. I said to her, “my dream is for you to eventually come back to teach at Astoria.” She wasn’t ready five years ago [or] three years ago. Finally, this year, I’ve convinced her to come back as a teacher. She’s now going to run my media lab.” -Allison Learn more: https://bit.ly/3CpFvIM #GirlsEd #GirlsEducation #STEM #STEMEducation #EducationEquity #STEAMEducation #Teachers #Principals

Student Leadership Network reposted this
I was recently featured in the philanthropy issue of Town & Country Magazine alongside other visionary CEOs and leaders driving meaningful change through their philanthropic organizations. It is an honor to be featured with Suzanne McCormick from YMCA of the USA, Philip Chong from QARI Quincy Asian Resources, Inc., Cecilia Conrad from Lever for Change, and Layla Zaidane from Future Caucus (formerly Millennial Action Project). I am incredibly proud to see the work of Student Leadership Network highlighted alongside other inspiring organizations that received charitable gifts from author and philanthropist MacKenzie Scott. Thanks to generous supporters like this, Student Leadership has scaled its impact by expanding its programs and services in girls’ and gender-expansive youth education and college access and success.. Through this work, we are opening doors to higher education for young people growing up in diverse, underserved communities, allowing them to fulfill their dreams. College application season is here - and families play a crucial role. At Student Leadership Network, our Directors of College Counseling (DCCs) are making an impact by empowering families with the knowledge and resources they need to navigate the college application process. Neonne Ameer, DCC at The Young Women’s Leadership School (TYWLS) of Queens, recently hosted a “Senior Family Night” to do that. Here are three key takeaways: 1. Stay involved by continuously asking questions about your child’s college research. 2. Support your child in visiting colleges in person when possible. Parents of our CollegeBound Initiative (CBI) students can use the college trips planned by our experienced DCCs. 3. Ask for support in the financial aid process, such as knowing your financial aid and scholarship options and understanding how to apply for them. With planning and the proper support, every student can find a path to success—and we’re here to guide them every step of the way. Learn more about what parents can do to prepare for application season: https://bit.ly/4gBljU5 📢 Let’s work together to create equitable access to higher education and ensure every student’s potential is realized! #CollegeApplications #CollegeAdmissions #CollegeBound #CollegeAccess #CollegeCounselor #CollegeCounseling #EducationEquity #HigherEd

At last week’s (Em)Power Breakfast: College Matters, we were excited to be joined by students from The Young Women’s Leadership Schools (TYWLS) and CollegeBound Initiative (CBI), as well as alumni from Student Leadership Network’s programs. The (Em)Power Breakfast was a fantastic opportunity for students and alumni to network and hear inspirational stories about the power of #highereducation. Listening to stories like these empowers them to pursue their goals and achieve their dreams. ✨ Of course, congratulations to our three alumni honorees—Kenya Bryant, Angel L. Santana, MPA, and Sharlim R. —on their special recognition.
