KIPP DC (Knowledge is Power Program DC) is a network of high-performing college preparatory charter schools in Washington, DC, that serve the city’s under-resourced communities. The campus building on Benning Road houses early education, elementary, and middle schools. The design of the building is a function of the long and narrow urban site and the educational mission of KIPP DC, which seeks not just to educate students but also to engage and transform neighborhoods east of the Anacostia River. KIPP DC, a prominent local public charter school, received approval to redevelop the District-owned Legacy College Preparatory School. The regulation-sized gymnasium features high-performance LED lighting, and the outdoor patio features a floor-to-ceiling, glazed storefront window system that enables views of the gym and the lobby below. The inviting space is a large student commons seating area that overlooks the fields. When first engaging with Studio Twenty Seven Architecture to consider home renovation and expansion, this couple was hesitant to advance the project due to the costs and inconveniences of home construction. After looking unsuccessfully for a new home that met their needs, they returned to Studio Twenty Seven to reengage the process. With only a minor expansion of the building footprint, the renovation provided a garage, additional bedroom, new living spaces and an improved entry and circulation pattern to this seventy-year-old home. Community is at the heart of the Two Rivers curriculum. The new middle school addition expresses community through the architectural feature of a central light monitor that washes down over the main circulation stair and gathering space, illuminating the school at its core. The classroom spaces and corridors are organized around this volume of light bringing the outside world into the heart of the building.
