We are thrilled to announce the completion of the Art Barn project in rural Minnesota, a unique architectural gem nestled within a serene wooded landscape with visual connections to nature. Designed by StudioHAU, the Art Barn is now fully operational, with its impressive private art collection beautifully displayed across the large and small galleries. The children’s art room is complete and buzzing with creativity as art education programs have officially begun. The versatile main gallery has already hosted its first movie screening, showcasing its seamless transformation from a gallery into a theater. With its dynamic spaces, the Art Barn is set to become a vibrant hub for community engagement, ready to host performances, lectures, and a variety of social events, enriching the local cultural scene. https://lnkd.in/g86PtWcT

StudioHAU is a design and research office merging architecture, nature, and sustainability in their projects.
About us
Established in 2016, StudioHAU is a design and research office focused on sustainable architecture, urbanism, and space. Our growing portfolio reflects timeless simplicity and unique statements through intelligent use of material, form, proportion, and natural light. We believe buildings play a vital role in public life and aim to create places that inspire social interaction and personal reflection. Our designs respond to site conditions, enhancing the symbiosis between natural forces like wind, water, and sun. StudioHAU prioritizes efficient and responsible design, working closely with clients to meet programmatic and budget objectives while creating inspirational spaces. Led by Yo-ichiro Hakomori, the team produces perspective renderings, 3D animations, and Building Information Modeling (BIM) to help clients, stakeholders, consultants, and collaborators visualize unique projects. Our approach aims to fulfill shared aspirations, contribute positively to the community, and respond to the natural environment. Yo-ichiro Hakomori, the founder of StudioHAU, received his Master of Architecture from UCLA's Graduate School of Architecture and Urban Planning and a Doctor of Engineering in Architecture from the University of Tokyo. Hakomori has worked on projects in California, Massachusetts, Minnesota, and Nova Scotia. He was previously a founding partner at wHY Architecture, working extensively on museums and single-family residences, including the Tyler Museum of Art, Pomona College Studio Art Hall, and the LEED Gold-certified Grand Rapids Art Museum. In Los Angeles, Hakomori collaborated with his mentor, Franklin D. Israel, and Pritzker Prize-winning architect Tadao Ando on an ambitious residence. Committed to educating the next generation of architects, Hakomori serves as a Professor of Practice and Director of Global Studies study abroad programs at the University of Southern California School of Architecture.

Our first museum project is covered in the The Berkshire Eagle and Boston Globe Media in Massachusetts! For several months our team has been working with the Berkshire Museum to reimagine their ground-floor as part of an effort to revitalize their institution in Downtown Pittsfield. From relocating their popular aquarium from the basement to designing new exhibition galleries for their vast collection of art, science and history pieces, our work is a creative response to many regional museums’ — some with major holdings — need to reprogram and redesign for new audiences. In response to the unique challenge in the Berkshires, our team tapped past experience designing sustainable solutions for Art Institute of Chicago, Grand Rapids Art Museum, and Pomona College. We look forward to sharing periodic updates to share construction progress. Groundbreaking slated for October 2024 and target completion in early 2026.
