📢 The End of an Era, Revisited: The Legacy of the Royal Navy's Rum Tradition Lives On It all started with the Royal Navy’s ingenious solution to a critical problem: how to safely transport water on long voyages in 1730. The answer? Rum. Fast forward to July 31, 1970 – a day that will forever be etched in history as the end of an era. On this day, the Royal Navy served its last "rum breakfast," marking the end of a tradition that had spanned centuries. Sailors wore black armbands in mourning, symbolizing the deep cultural impact of this change. Originally, half a pint of rum diluted with water (1:4) was served twice a day to prevent bacterial growth in the water stored in wooden barrels. As technology advanced, the need for such methods faded, but the tradition endured, becoming a cherished part of naval life. However, like many traditions, it eventually met its end due to modern regulations and changing times. But history has a way of resurfacing. In 2009, a remarkable discovery was made: the last remnants of the original Black Tot rum were found in a London yard.
