Databricks' "Serverless" compute is now Generally Available (GA), seeking to tackle the intricacies of compute configuration and pains of 4 minute cluster startup time. Here some key facts and words of wisdom: 1) You don't need to create nor fine-tune any compute, unlike all purpose compute or SQL Serverless. 2) It supports both Python and SQL, but no mentions as to when R/Scala will be supported, if at all. 3) Startup time when you haven't used Serverless in a certain period of time is about 15 - 30 seconds based on my testing. If you've recently used it, it is nearly instantly on (see video). Over time, cold-start will be better. 4) It is available for interactive sessions, jobs, and DLTs. I particularly like the thought of using it for jobs due to its affordability. 5) There are still limitations, but kudos to Databricks for doing a good job of documenting those (see link to documentation in comments). 6) Cost allocation through tags is available in workflows, but for interactive usage (anything outside of a workflow), tag-based cost allocation is not available. You can however leverage the billing usage tables. Two closing thoughts... A) If you currently have production workloads on Databricks, I encourage you to compare actual price and time performance vs your currently configured workloads before making the switch, in addition to making sure your workloads are compatible. B) If you are a new Databricks customers, I'd encourage you to start with Serverless, as I expect it will only continue to get better and better over time. Hope you found this helpful!
