  • Philadelphia leadership including Mayor Cherelle Parker, Superintendent Tony B. Watlington Sr., Ed.D., and Chief Education Officer Dr. Debora Borges-Carrera, Ed. D., came to visit our program at Southwark. Sunrise of Philadelphia is a part of the Mayor's extended day/extended school year pilot and the additional programming has had major benefits for our community. Sunrise has been a partner of the Southwark community for over 25 years now. Mayor Parker's deliberate commitment to student safety, academic success, and support for working families made joining this pilot an easy decision. Southwark families have access to high quality before school programming, afterschool programming, and programming over winter and summer break at no cost. Accessibility to this programming supports working families and gives students the opportunity to be somewhere safe to be during out-of-school hours that fosters emotional growth, and development. Mayor Parker visited the kindergarten class and they got to ask her questions. She also visited the WHYY Media Lab where 4th grade girls were learning about videography.

We’re thrilled to announce that Sunrise of Philadelphia is now expanding to offer Before-School Care at the majority of our sites! 🎉 We understand the challenges working families face when balancing their careers and childcare needs. By introducing this new programming, we're providing a safe, supportive environment for children not just after school, but before the day even begins. This addition is all about supporting families and ensuring kids have a strong, positive start to their day. Students can now have a quiet space to finish homework, partake in enriching crafts or activities, eat breakfast before classes, and get the opportunity to connect with students they might not get to during the school day. Thank you to our dedicated team and the community for making this possible. We can’t wait to see the positive impact it will have on our families. #BeforeSchoolCare #AfterschoolProgram #SupportingFamilies #Community #Childcare

  • Our June Employee of the Month is Ana Tapia! Ana Tapia is the Site Director at South Philadelphia High School, one of Sunrise’s longest standing sites. She has been with the organization for 2 years now and graduated from New York University with a Bachelor of Social Work. SPHS had a big year, thanks to the dedication and persistence of Ms. Tapia, including an impactful day trip to Washington DC in May, reaching full enrollment capacity for summer, and an awesome end of year field trip to Dorney Park. Ana’s youth-first approach is a great reflection of Sunrise’s mission. “Our high school youth face adversity everyday” Says Tapia. “They attend a public high school in Philadelphia. Unfortunately, our public schools - especially high schools - are severely underfunded and understaffed and it comes across in every story our youth shares with us.” She reflects on the importance of providing a safe haven for Sunrise’s youth, not only from the streets but oftentimes from home and even school. She emphasizes the importance of encouraging and inspiring youth to explore all of their possibilities and passions. “My goal is that each high school student that comes through Sunrise understands the importance of getting their high school diploma and having a plan for their future, or at least know what their options can be” Says Ana.”We’re making sure all of our youth understand their value and knows that they can demand what they deserve through advocacy!” Ana Tapia's unwavering commitment and youth-first approach have made a remarkable impact at South Philadelphia High School, keep up the good work Ana!

Led by The Franklin Institute, GSK Science in the Summer™ is back for its 38th year! In a remarkable year for astronomical exploration and discovery, GSK Science in the Summer™, a free summer STEM program for students in grades 2 through 6, returns in 2024 with a new theme: "Be a Space Scientist!" The theme invites students to investigate the challenges of exploring and traveling in space. Supported by GSK, the national program aims to reach 23,400 students across 290 organizations while providing TFI professional training to approximately 500 educators to help them develop skills to provide high-quality informal STEM experiences for youth nationwide. An estimated 7,000 students across Greater Philadelphia alone will experience being a space scientist this summer through strategic partnerships with 40 youth-serving organizations dedicated to providing high-quality programming to children from groups traditionally under-represented in STEM careers or from under-resourced communities. Some include Boys & Girls Clubs of Philadelphia, Cambodian Association of Greater Philadelphia, Free Library of Philadelphia, Project HOME, Sunrise of Philadelphia, Girls Inc. of Greater Philadelphia & Southern New Jersey, and more. Explore the free available GSK Science in the Summer™ curriculum at scienceinthesummer.fi.edu, developed by The Franklin Institute.

  • #ICYMI Yesterday was #AfterschoolAdvocacyDay in Harrisburg! Sunrise students from South Philadelphia High School visited the Capitol building and 2 of our students gave speeches on why afterschool is so valuable to students in Pennsylvania. Thank you so much to all of the strong advocates that came out today and showed support for afterschool. The event featured a press conference where State Rep. Liz Fiedler, Senator Nikil Saval, State Rep. Doyle Heffley, and Senator David Argall all spoke on the need for increased access to high quality afterschool programming alongside nationally recognized afterschool ambassadors from across the state. Thank you to Pennsylvania Statewide Afterschool Youth Development Network (PSAYDN) for hosting such an amazing event! #afterschoolworks
