SuPeRBE Project

In my interview with Alexander Heintze from Immobilien Zeitung we discussed the critical importance of addressing the climate resilience in urban planning and building construction. During our discussion, I highlighted the pressing need to update current building practices as we face an escalating climate risks and the urgency of having a standardized, cross-scale rating methods to evaluate resilience of the built environment at both building and neighborhood levels. In the interview, I also discussed the Interreg CENTRAL EUROPE Programme funded SuPeRBE Project in which Hochschule München University of Applied Sciences is collaborating with over 25 reseachers from 6 EU countries to adress these challenges and develop a novel standardized cross-scale rating system for assessing urban resilience, supported by a digital toolkit that allows decision-makers to simulate and evaluate the resilience of their communities. Our goal is to create tools that can drive the transition toward a sustainable, smart, and resilient built environment. 🤝Meet Project Partner Municipality of Schnifis! 💡The Municipality of Schnifis is a founding member of the Austrian KLAR! Region “KLAR! Im Walgau” represents 14 municipalities with approximately a total number of inhabitants of 38.500. The KLAR! Region Walgau is preparing for climate change adaptations. The Municipality of Schnifis is characterized by comprehensive municipality development and planning considering all climate change aspects. A culture of innovation and citizen participation is live in the Municipality. Schnifis is a pilot municipality in various topics such as energy community, digitalization, use of old buildings, etc. The Municipality has already been awarded several prizes for its numerous innovations: Energy Globe Vorarlberg in 2021, Energy Globe Austria in 2021 for sustainable municipality development and the CESBA Neighborhood Award 2019. 💡Participation in the SuPeRBE project has the following advantages for the Municipality of Schnifis: ✅International and regional recognition as a pilot municipality, ✅Preparation of a climate change adaptation plan, ✅Review of existing climate change adaptation measures, ✅Raising awareness of climate change and necessary adaptation measures among the population, ✅Collaboration between the various stakeholders in the Municipality and analyzing their interests. 🤝Meet Project Partner Regione Piemonte! 💡Piemonte is a region in northwestern Italy, bordering France, Switzerland, and the Italian regions of Lombardia, Valle d’Aosta, Liguria, and Emilia Romagna; its main city and historical capital is Turin. Its name means “at the foot of the mountains”, as it’s surrounded on three sides by the Alps, including Monviso and Monte Rosa. 💡Participating in the #SuPeRBE project will contribute to the Regional Strategy to Sustainable Development, which has been adopted in Piemonte Region since 2022 in conjunction with the national strategy and 2030 Agenda. It defines guidelines and objectives for the transition towards sustainable development and works together with the Turin Metropolitan Agenda, universities, and main regional stakeholders. Moreover, in this context, the first extract of the Regional Strategy to Climate Change was recently approved, as well as the Plan of Climate Resilience approved by the Municipality of Turin, an associated partner in the SuPeRBE project that is very involved and active in this field. Last week, we had an interesting roundtable discussion with the key stakeholders involved in #ClimateAdaptation tools, services, platforms, and best practices in #Prague and the whole #CzechRepublic! This online session was part of a SuPeRBE Project's activity (Interreg CENTRAL EUROPE Programme) focused on mapping state-of-the-art methodologies, tools, best practices, and solution repositories addressing climate risks at different scales—buildings, neighbourhoods, and communities—across the Central European macro-region - in particular, Czech Republic. 🤝Meet Project Partner Regione Veneto! 💡#RV is a public administration institutionally responsible for a wide range of issues related to the Veneto region. It is divided into Areas and Directorates, each of which is dedicated to specific issues. The RV entity that will be involved in this specific project is the “Direzione Ambiente e transizione ecologica”. The Direzione Ambiente e Transizione ecologica is part of the Area Tutela e sicurezza del Territorio, which is responsible for coordination and development in the areas of Land Government, Environment, and Soil Defense. 💡The RV participated in several #Interreg projects in the 2014-2023 programming period. As a regional administration with over 200,000 employees, the Veneto Region can implement multiple projects simultaneously, with its departments and specialists able to be involved and carry out different activities without overlapping tasks and responsibilities. 🤝Meet Project partner Grad Šibenik (City of #Šibenik) 💡The City of Šibenik is the capital and cultural, educational, administrative and economic centre of Šibenik-Knin County. The City of Šibenik is a unit of local self-government with more than 120 employees, and through ten administrative departments, is responsible for planning and implementing activities related to urbanism, economy and entrepreneurship, utilities, social welfare, childcare, education, transport, civil protection, etc. 💡The City of Šibenik has implemented and is implementing several different projects financed by national and #EU funds. Over the years, the city has transformed from an industrial to a tourist centre. As a city that wants to protect its natural and cultural heritage and create optimal living conditions for its citizens in recent years, is experiencing climate change and its consequences, such as temperature differences, rising sea levels and forest fires. For these reasons, the city wants to increase its resilience to the risk of climate change. Through this project, the City of Šibenik aims to reduce the climate-change vulnerability of territories and urban areas to adverse climate-change impacts and to improve disaster risk prevention and management. Since its establishment in 2017, it has been dedicated to creating cutting-edge online tools and providing expert services in the areas of Smart Cities, Smart Buildings, IoT, and Digital Twins (both Digital Building Twins and Digital City Twins). Their expertise extends to environmental data analysis, 3D visualization, and decision-support solutions aimed at tackling the global challenge of climate change. 💡As a contributor to the #SuPeRBE project, FeliCity brings specialised knowledge in the development of web-based solutions, with a focus on supporting sustainable urban environments. They will take an active role in developing the SuPeRBE Platform, a key component of the project, and contribute to several critical aspects, including decision-making models, climate services, and pilot activities. 🤝Meet Project partner ČVUT UCEEB! 💡The University Centre for Energy Efficient Buildings (#UCEEB) is a research institute under the Czech Technical University (#CTU) in Prague, dedicated to advancing environmentally friendly building practices and technologies. Its mission revolves around fostering sustainable development and creating healthy, comfortable indoor environments for building users. UCEEB focuses on a wide range of topics, from energy efficiency and innovative construction materials to renewable energy integration and nature-based solutions. Notably, the UCEEB building itself has been recognized by the Czech Council for Green Buildings as one of the TOP 10 ground-breaking green buildings in the Czech Republic. 💡Participation in the #SuPeRBE project offers multiple benefits for UCEEB and for the broader context of the city of Prague. One of the critical issues highlighted in the Prague 2030 Climate Plan, published in 2021, is the city’s difficulty in assessing its climate resilience due to the lack of effective methodologies. The SuPeRBE project is set to fill this gap by developing a comprehensive climate risk assessment methodology that is directly applicable to municipalities, helping them better understand their vulnerabilities and plan appropriate adaptation measures. 🤝Meet Project Partner iiSBE Italia R&D! 💡iiSBE Italia R&D is a non-profit organization. Its thematic competencies belong to the field of methodologies and tools for the sustainability and resilience assessment of the built environment. iiSBE Italia R&D’s main business is the participation in EU research and cooperation projects: over the last seven years, iiSBE Italia R&D participated as a partner in more than ten projects; all the projects’ outcomes (assessment systems, methodologies, tools, etc.) are made available to public authorities and other interested stakeholders as open-source resources. 💡In this framework, being part of the #SuPeRBE consortium will allow iiSBE Italia R&D to increase resilience to climate change risks by contributing to the development of innovative methods and tools to implement high-impact and effective adaptation and risk management measures at different spatial scales. 🌍The floods in Europe in 2021 were a wake-up call: while our buildings are a major contributor to climate change, they're also at great risk from its impacts. Traditionally, the construction sector has focused on climate protection, but now we must also prioritize climate resilience. ☝️Ahmed Khoja from Hochschule München University of Applied Sciences and the #SuPeRBE project international team are tackling this challenge by developing an innovative tool to assess and improve buildings' resilience to climate change. This tool will help local authorities and communities evaluate and adapt their structures to minimize damage and maintain functionality in the face of climate impacts.
