This was O'Hare earlier this week, at the end of a very long, but fulfilling day. ORD is the 7th busiest airport in the world. We were in Chicago for ProMat 2025, which has gotta be the busiest supply chain conference in the world. You can never have enough time to explore a city like Chicago OR to mingle with 50,000+ at a show like ProMat. But we did a pretty good job making the most of it. On the latter, it was so good to see a wide variety of old & new friends. As we've learned in so many ways, relationships are everything. And as good as virtual anything has gotten, NOTHING replaces the opportunity to shake a hand, hug a neck (as my dear Granddad liked to call it), and catch up in person. The conversations & the laughs & the moments are so much better. And even more special: are those relationships that can stand the test of time. Or really: the test of anything else. Friction, late shipments, mistakes, misunderstandings, success, problems, distance, tariffs, life. You name it. Blessed indeed are the bridge-builders and the high-road-takers that go the extra mile to protect these precious relationships that are so important to not only our global supply chains everywhere; but these bonds are paramount to this journey we are all on. However, like the garden that I try to grow every spring (that's a whole 'nother story): relationships require nurturing. I've always liked the bank analogy that I heard forever ago. A successful business leader told me once that every relationship had a "Rapport Bank". And she said the best of the best are the folks that recognize the need to make more deposits into that account. And not only be making withdrawals. Those are wise words, that I'm glad I learned at a young age. I may not always get it right, but it isn't due to lack of effort. While things like gold and bitcoin can fluctuate quite a bit in value, the power of relationships holds remarkably steady, especially when we take the time & energy to invest in them. And make those precious, intentional deposits. And you know: that's Good News to me. One last, very separate note: during my two years with the USAF in Wichita, Kansas, my supervisor was TSgt Vincent James. We weren't the best of friends & we certainly didn't always agree on stuff. But TSgt James was a good person and good boss, that helped me through some tough times. And for that: I'm grateful. I hadn't spoken to him since I left McConnell AFB way back in 2002. I found out this week that Vincent R. James passed away a couple of years ago at the age of 58. Rest in peace, my friend. Appreciate you. Folks - none of us know what's right around the corner. Get out there and shake those hands, hug those necks, break that bread, laugh way out loud and invest that very finite time. Because as always: blest be the ties that bind.
