Solving the toughest challenges facing California's land, air and water.
About us
Sustainable Conservation helps California thrive by uniting people to solve the toughest challenges facing our land, air and water. Every day, we bring together business, landowners and government to steward the resources that we all depend on in ways that make economic sense. Because we know that common ground is California’s most important resource. Too often, conflict overshadows common ground when solving environmental problems. For decades, fighting it out in court or the state house has been the default approach to addressing tough challenges facing California’s land, air, and water. Each conflict deepens the distrust and animosity between environmental groups and business, while the pressure on our vital natural resources only increases. California deserves better. When we unite all those who are affected by a problem, understand their perspectives, and find common ground, we succeed in stewarding the resources we all depend on for a thriving future.

National parks in arid regions rely on complex groundwater systems to supply water for visitors, wildlife, and ecosystems. We applaud the NPS in actively researching and managing these water resources to maintain a balance between human use and ecological preservation across its parks

We have good news for California water as we adapt to a changing climate: We’re replenishing more groundwater through recharge than ever before. We need to build on our momentum to ensure a resilient water future for California – but we need your help. "For California, it’s harder to say if it’s going through an aridification trend. We can say more confidently that climate change is likely to amplify the extremes. When you get a drought, it’s going to be hotter and drier than it would have been. And probably when you get these atmospheric rivers, a warmer world means they’ll have more water, which could lead to more flooding," said Dr. Benjamin Cook in a recent PPIC interview. Climate-smart solutions like groundwater recharge can mitigate both the peaks and trough of our state's changing precipitation patterns. https://buff.ly/3XMsWyo

Recharge isn’t as straightforward as pressing a button, but our recent wet winters saw savvy farmers and water managers ready to act. Farmers are eager to be part of the solution. A gift to Sustainable Conservation today can help us empower more willing growers to recharge water on their land. buff.ly/4gKsaux

Sustainable Conservation’s work with the Department of Water Resources to study how climate change will affect future water supplies in five San Joaquin Valley watersheds is almost complete. We’re close to achieving our ambitious $8 million goal to implement the findings from these studies – but we need your support.

The Public Policy Institute of California reports that 2023 was a banner year for refilling groundwater aquifers. As a state, we recharged 17% more water in the San Joaquin Valley than in 2017 – our last very wet winter. With a gift today, you can help us keep going to realize recharge’s full potential in California.
