Earlier this month, the U.S. Gulf of Mexico shrimp fishery achieved Responsible Fisheries Management (RFM) Certification. This includes white, brown, and pink shrimp, and is the first shrimp fishery to achieve RFM certification. Achieving RFM certification was a culmination of years of collaboration and fishery improvement work among the shrimp industry, management agencies, and NGOs. For 15 years, multiple industry-led Fishery Improvement Projects (FIPs), supported by Sustainable Fisheries Partnership and the Gulf of Mexico Shrimp Supply Chain Roundtable (led by Megan Westmeyer), Audubon Nature Institute, and Texas Sea Grant, worked diligently to implement changes needed to the fishery to ready it to pursue and successfully achieve RFM Certification. #shrimp #shrimpfishery #sustaianableseafood #seafood From PerishableNews.com: https://lnkd.in/eGeyRqiH

FROM SEA TO SUITE: EMBRACING RESPONSIBLY SOURCED SEAFOOD FOR THE LOCAL HOTEL INDUSTRY On May 24, 2024, over 50 participants, comprising chefs, procurement officers, and seafood suppliers, gathered at the Marriott Manila for a Responsible Seafood Sourcing (RSS) orientation and education activity organized by USAID Fish Right through Sustainable Fisheries Partnership/Bluer Seas Philippines in partnership with Marriott International Philippines. The three-hour activity aimed to raise awareness, identify “high-risk” products and “species of concern” in seafood supply chains, and determine practical ways to adopt RSS in its operations. It highlighted the program’s shared advocacy for responsible sourcing with Marriott’s Serve360 sustainability and social impact goals, particularly for seafood products sourced locally. Newport-owned and managed properties such as the Sheraton Manila Hotel, Hilton Manila, Gordon Ramsay Restaurant, and Hotel Okura Manila expressed interest in promoting sustainable, traceable, and responsibly sourced seafood. Other Marriott properties, such as The Westin Sonata, Clark Marriott, and Sheraton Bay, also attended. This underscores Better Seafood Philippines’ commitment to protecting the oceans and guaranteeing #supplychain equity for local fishing communities through #responsiblesourcing.

The newest version of SFP's T75 Sectors Status Update finds that, while there is a general upward trend in production from sustainable or improving sources across most seafood sectors, some sectors and regions still face challenges that hinder sustainability. This year’s report reveals substantial increases in sustainable and/or improving production in sectors such as tuna, squid, and salmon. However, the report also notes that some sectors, such as large shrimp and octopus, continue to face challenges in reaching the 75% target, possibly due to limited market leverage and industry interest. JOURNEYING THROUGH FOOD SAFETY: AN IMPORTANT PILLAR FOR A CLEAN, SAFE, AND RESPONSIBLY SOURCED SEAFOOD On May 20-23, 2024, the USAID Fish Right Program conducted the Pagkaing-Dagat, Kaligtasan sa Hapag Kainan: An RSS Learning Tour led by the Sustainable Fisheries Partnership and Bluer Seas Philippines. The activity aimed to strengthen the post-harvest capacities of seven fishing communities from Occidental Mindoro, Palawan, Subic, and Olongapo City by visiting different institutional seafood processing facilities and retail markets. Market partners SeaTrace International, Meliomar Inc., and Fishta Seafood hosted the visits and shared generous information on fisheries post-harvest, traceability, and food safety practices. The participants recognized the significance of proper fish handling and processing and identified ways to improve their processing activities and ensure compliance with traceability documents for their seafood products. This learning experience underscores the importance of food safety and traceability for fishing communities to strengthen supply chain visibility and expand market opportunities. Participants expressed appreciation for the activity and commitment to applying the learnings to foster a culture of #quality, #safe, and #responsiblysourced #seafood in their respective fishing communities.
