Brandi Parker and Fe Amarante are on a relentless mission to spread their message to as many people as possible: There's is an undeniable parallel between the finite resources of 'spaceship Earth' and the finite resources in our humanity as creativity-filled beings. 🌎 🚀 🎨 Enter: Zero Waste Creatives Just like earth, we are living entities with limited resources - when we’re burnt out, we’re not managing those resources wisely and therefore we’re creating waste. We must take care of ourselves and our nervous systems in order to sustain the packaging work we're doing, which will ultimately benefit the climate AND people. "To achieve sustainability, we need creativity. We need to imagine a world that doesn’t exist yet." The National Indian Carbon Coalition (NICC) is a tribally led non-profit program that helps tribal nations and indigenous communities take advantage of nature-based solutions to enter into environmental commodities markets through the development of carbon sequestration projects. We are extremely proud to purchase carbon offsets from the National Indian Carbon Coalition following each of our SPC events to supplement the rest of our sustainability initiatives, funding projects like the Mississippi Band of Choctaw Indians Forest Carbon Project and the Fond Du Lac Band Forest Carbon Project. A huge thank you to Bryan Van Stippen, Program Director of the NICC, for sharing their story on our main stage yesterday. WOW! What a dynamic, inspiring, and successful week it was here in Chicago at #SPCAdvance. We can't thank our sponsors, speakers, and attendees enough. We heard from leading packaging experts on topics like #Extended #Producer #Responsibility and packaging #innovation, stewed on complex ideas like consumer #behavior #change, and moved the industry forward as a whole by coming together to focus on moving #further and #faster towards #carbon #reduction. Many more recaps of sessions and main stage talks to come! #SPCAdvance #SPCAdvance2024 #SustainablePackaging

The #paperization trend is only growing, and companies are moving towards renewable fiber alternatives. In their panel discussion, Brad Kurzynowski, Sabrina Dixon-Ridges, Caroline DeLoach, and Devin Giles discussed the many challenges, learnings, and benefits when it comes to alternative fiber packaging. As Caroline voiced, "It's easier to start with the more circular option and reduce its footprint over time than to start with the lower footprint option and improve its circularity." #SPCAdvance #SPCAdvance2024 #Chicago #FurtherAndFaster

"We've lost sight of our destination. We've been so busy setting #sustainable #packaging goals that we've gotten lost on why we're setting them. The real end point should be fighting the #climate #crisis." Yesterday our afternoon main stage sessions began with a level-setting from our SPC Director, Olga Kachook. How DO we tackle climate change with our packaging efforts? Start to fold packaging goals and wins into your climate strategy: - Fold it under goals to get to net zero - Talk about it in one place on your website and sustainability reports - Calculate the avoided emissions of using recycled materials and count that as a win for climate goals #SPCAdvance #SPCAdvance2024 #FurtherAndFaster #CarbonReduction #Chicago

Connected packaging is just that - packaging that's technologically on the grid in order to serve an educational purpose and improve the success of recycling. The idea of connected packaging comes in handy when it comes to pizza boxes, whose disposal instructions are often unclear and confusing for consumers. Should pizza boxes be composted because of the food residue? Is the residue minimal enough for the box to be recycled? Emily True, Senior Global Sustainability Manager, Pizza Hut & Lisa Bowles, Sr. Segment Marketing Manager, Smurfit Westrock dove into the topic during their main stage session yesterday! #SPCAdvance #SPCAdvance2024 #SustainablePackaging #Packaging #FurtherandFaster #Chicago

It's easy to get in the weeds when it comes to the complexities around alternative sources for packaging. Thankfully, Julia Marsh, Co-Founder and CEO of Sway, and Pierre-Yves Paslier, Co-CEO of Notpla, illuminated the magic of seaweed during their back-to-back main stage sessions. Both leaders in biobased packaging, these two companies are bringing ocean-based feedstocks into the mainstream. #SPCAdvance #SPCAdvance2024 #SustainablePackaging #Packaging #FurtherandFaster #Chicago

How is climate change reshaping America? Yesterday, Abrahm Lustgarten, ProPublica reporter and author of “On the Move,” gave an honest and real talk about the ramifications, economic impacts, and significant global changes that are happening due to our changing climate. "My sense is that everybody see the changes happening around them, but they don’t always understand how to talk about them. But If you can get around the polarizing language, I actually think people are on the same page." #SPCAdvance #SPCAdvance2024 #SustainablePackaging #Packaging #FurtherandFaster #Chicago

Which packaging claims actually work? Which ones aren't worth using? Which ones are actually detrimental to your brand- and the environment? In her session "Turn-Ons and Turn-Offs: What On-Pack Sustainability Messaging Works in Your Favor (and What Doesn’t)," Suzanne Shelton shared more about what makes good data and how to leverage it to produce responsible packaging. Were you in this full house? Share your favorite takeaways below! #SPCAdvance #SPCAdvance2024 #Chicago #FurtherAndFaster

Environmental Justice (EJ) should always be the through-line of any large scale site development project. In this morning's session, "De-risking Projects through Pragmatic Environmental Justice Strategies," LaTorria Sims, MS, ASP explained strategies to integrate EJ principles not just into site development, but every type of business. The focus should always be on authentic community engagement. "Regardless of the type of business you have, be an active member of the community you’re working in. Don’t just be isolated in a building somewhere. The worst thing you could possibly do is not engage." When companies take this approach and implement environmental justice programs, communities are seen and heard, health impacts improve, funding increases, and more- all while corporate sustainability goals are achieved. #SPCAdvance #SPCAdvance2024 #SustainablePackaging #Packaging #FurtherandFaster #Chicago
