During our last Electronics Recycling and Reuse Event this summer, 690 residents from across the county donated 29,400 pounds of electronics, clothing, and household items! Thanks to our community's efforts and SF Bay Goodwill, these items were given a second life instead of ending up in the landfill. ♻️ Let’s keep making a difference together — join us at our next event on September 28 in Redwood City and help reduce waste in San Mateo County! We are lucky to have Vanessa on our team! Read on to learn more about Vanessa and her work promoting active transportation in our communities.
🌟Employee Spotlight 🌟 Meet Vanessa Castro, Sustainability Specialist at the County of San Mateo Sustainability department. Joining the County nearly two years ago, Vanessa’s transition to the county was inspired by her previous experience at the County Office of Education, where she spent five years promoting safe routes to school. This background in active transportation laid the foundation for her current work, which extends beyond schools to encompass broader community initiatives. Vanessa finds immense satisfaction in the people she works with, both within her team and in the communities they serve. She values the opportunity to engage directly with residents, especially in areas that lack adequate walking or biking facilities. This direct interaction allows her to listen to community needs and work towards making positive changes. For Vanessa, the people she meets and the impact she can make in their lives are the most rewarding aspects of her job. A life philosophy that guides Vanessa is the belief that things will always work out; a lesson imparted by a former colleague. This mindset helps her stay focused and motivated, even when facing challenges. Vanessa encourages others to take leaps of faith and pursue opportunities, even when they seem daunting. Looking ahead, Vanessa aspires to deepen her knowledge in active transportation and learn more about the planning and public works processes. She recognizes the vast amount of information still to be learned and is eager to become well-versed in these areas. Outside of work, Vanessa enjoys a fulfilling personal life. She loves baking, especially banana bread and Mexican pastries, and she cherishes time spent with her family, friends, and her energetic border collie mix, Bonnie. Vanessa is also an advocate for personal wellness, participating in holiday challenges and exploring downtown Redwood City during lunch breaks to maintain a healthy work-life balance. Vanessa's passion for helping others is a driving force in both her professional and personal life. She aims to leave a positive impact on the world, inspired by her parents' hard work and determination as immigrants. Working in the County has been an incredibly rewarding experience for her, providing numerous opportunities for stepping outside of her comfort zone. As a first-generation college graduate, Vanessa is proud of her cultural anthropology background and the unique perspective it brings to her work in sustainability. Her story is one of dedication, growth, and an unwavering commitment to making a difference. #WorkWithPurpose #smcgov
