What do steroids, sneakers, a coach, and a referee have to do with AI in education? They are sports analogies for considering the different relationships between students/teachers and AI systems. 💊 Steroids: AI that elevates short-term performance, but leave you worse off in the long term. 👟 Sneakers: AI-powered tools used to augment people’s skills and make them more productive. 🏅 Coach: AI that improves people’s own capabilities. 🤵 Referee: I added this one myself. AI can force a change of rules. For education this means moving beyond passive uses of AI to replicate traditional models of education to active, critical use of AI that puts students in control. When kids have all of the answers per old instructional paradigms, it will force us to rethink what and how we teach and why. Here are selected insights from the article: 💡 Simple confidence-based highlighting, similar to what’s done in spelling and grammar check, can help people spot and correct fabrications or “hallucinations” produced by LLM-based search tools.
