SWANA Director of Applied Research, Jeremy O'Brien, PE, BCEE, spoke at the Association of State and Territorial Solid Waste Management Officials (ASTSWMO) Materials Management Workshop. The workshop focused on waste diversion, covering several topics related to recycling, organics management, and beneficial use. Jeremy participated in the panel ““How do we reach 50% Recycling Rate by 2030?” and shared SWANA research on recycling rates, contamination issues, and recycling behavior. The workshop brought together government representatives from all over. Jeremy connected with Glenn San Nicolas from Guam, member of the SWANA Pacific Basin Chapter. SWANA Executive Director/CEO Amy Lestition Burke, MA, FASAE, CAE, SWANA Director of Public Policy Kristyn Oldendorf, and SWANA Summer Intern Aidan Leurdijk visited Lynsey K. Baer, PE, BCEE and other SWANA members at the Delaware Solid Waste Authority (DSWA) recycling education center, followed by a tour of the DSWA MRF operated by Republic Services, Inc. The DSWA recycling education center hosts school groups and provides hands-on activities to learn about recycling, composting, and more. The MRF handles 420-520 tons of single stream recycling a day. The team enjoyed seeing the sorting in process! Interested in learning more? The LCSWMA Waste-to-Energy (WTE) Facility, operated by Reworld Waste, processes 95% of Lancaster County’s municipal solid waste, creating renewable energy that powers the equivalent of 30,000 area homes. In a unique and beneficial arrangement, the facility provides steam to its neighbor, Perdue Agribusiness, for use in their soybean processing operations.
