Active since 1996, NISEC has notable achievements nationally, such as pioneering the deployment of native IPv6 in Finnish campus networks, introducing and rolling out Eduroam-based wireless roaming in Finland, forming the TREX regional Internet exchange point, establishing internationally federated research testbeds with PlanetLAB and GENI, as well as creating two successful spinoff companies. The core competencies of NISEC currently traverse four areas: Network Security; IoT Security; Hardware-Assisted Security; Privacy and Usable Security. 𝑊ℎ𝑎𝑡 𝑖𝑠 𝑇𝑈𝑁𝐼 𝑟𝑜𝑙𝑒 𝑖𝑛 𝑡ℎ𝑒 𝑝𝑟𝑜𝑗𝑒𝑐𝑡❔ NISEC will lead the #security related research activities of #SwarmchestrateEU. More precisely, the main focus will be on the design of efficient and provably secure self-sovereign identity (SSI) schemes. In addition to that, NISEC will conduct research on designing novel functional #encryption (FE) and hybrid homomorphic encryption (HHE) schemes, aimed at enabling #privacy_preserving analysis of sensitive data. 𝑊ℎ𝑜 𝑎𝑟𝑒 𝑡ℎ𝑒 𝑘𝑒𝑦 𝑝𝑒𝑜𝑝𝑙𝑒 𝑖𝑛𝑣𝑜𝑙𝑣𝑒𝑑? 🌟 The TUNI team is led by Dr. Reyhaneh Rabaninejad, a postdoctoral researcher at NISEC. The group is supervised by Prof. Antonis Michalas.

With more than 300 undergraduate and postgraduate courses and nearly 20,000 students from over 140 countries, ENU is ranked #1 modern university in Scotland (Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2023), ranked in the top 10 UK modern universities (Times/Sunday Times Good University Guide 2023), and the top Scottish modern university for research power and impact (Research Excellence Framework 2021). 𝑊ℎ𝑎𝑡 𝑖𝑠 𝐸𝑁𝑈 𝑟𝑜𝑙𝑒 𝑖𝑛 𝑡ℎ𝑒 𝑝𝑟𝑜𝑗𝑒𝑐𝑡❔ ENU, in collaboration with the scientific coordinator of the project, University of Westminster (https://lnkd.in/d9mw5xyS), is the main initiator of the #SwarmchestrateEU project and therefore holds an important role towards the overall research and development activities of this project -particularly in the design and development of the overall architecture, from the aspect of orchestration, swarm concept, and distributed intelligence. 𝑊ℎ𝑦 𝑖𝑠 𝑡ℎ𝑖𝑠 𝑝𝑟𝑜𝑗𝑒𝑐𝑡 𝑖𝑚𝑝𝑜𝑟𝑡𝑎𝑛𝑡 𝑓𝑜𝑟 𝐸𝑁𝑈? 👁️🗨️ This project is of particular importance to ENU and specifically for the Edinburgh Napier University's SCEBE mainly in two ways. Firstly, this project will provide the opportunity to showcase the impact of on-going research in realistic settings thus contributing to the next REF review. Secondly, the developments in this project about emerging concepts such as Cloud-to-Edge Continuum, Orchestration, Swarm computing, Blockchain, and Distributed Intelligence will inspire students and researchers towards these promising fields –something that is currently missing from ENU. 𝑊ℎ𝑜 𝑎𝑟𝑒 𝑡ℎ𝑒 𝑘𝑒𝑦 𝑝𝑒𝑜𝑝𝑙𝑒 𝑖𝑛𝑣𝑜𝑙𝑣𝑒𝑑? 🌟 The ENU team for the Swarmchestrate project is led by Dr Amjad Ullah –who specialises in Cloud and Edge-based systems with an interest in orchestration, auto-scaling, and optimisation. Amjad is supported by Prof. Xiaodong Liu –who specialises in Pervasive Systems and Smart Cyber-physical systems– and Prof. Emma Hart –who specialises in Learning, Optimisation and Evolutionary Swarm robotics.

𝑀𝑒𝑒𝑡 𝑡ℎ𝑒 𝑆𝑤𝑎𝑟𝑚𝑐ℎ𝑒𝑠𝑡𝑟𝑎𝑡𝑒 𝑝𝑎𝑟𝑡𝑛𝑒𝑟𝑠: 𝚄𝚂𝚃 👩💻 UST is a multinational digital technology company. For more than 20 years, UST has worked side by side with the world’s best companies to make a real impact through transformation. Powered by technology, inspired by people and led by purpose, UST partners with their clients from design to operation. With deep domain expertise and a future-proof philosophy, UST embeds innovation and agility into their clients’ organizations. With over 30,000 employees in 30 countries, UST builds for boundless impact –touching billions of lives in the process. 𝑊ℎ𝑎𝑡 𝑖𝑠 𝑈𝑆𝑇 𝑟𝑜𝑙𝑒 𝑖𝑛 𝑡ℎ𝑒 𝑝𝑟𝑜𝑗𝑒𝑐𝑡❔ UST provides #SwarmchestrateEU with a demonstrator based on a #metaverse of a natural habitat that requires #orchestration of sensors and data in order to bring to life a simulation a constantly changing and accurate #digitaltwin. UST is also involved in the development of the decentralisation and blockchain components of the project. 𝑊ℎ𝑦 𝑖𝑠 𝑡ℎ𝑖𝑠 𝑝𝑟𝑜𝑗𝑒𝑐𝑡 𝑖𝑚𝑝𝑜𝑟𝑡𝑎𝑛𝑡 𝑓𝑜𝑟 𝑈𝑆𝑇? 🆕 Digital twins and metaverse environments have been built for engineering and entertainment. There is a whole series of potential benefits deriving from better modelling and visualising the natural environment –from education, to bioscape management, to disaster management. However, building accurate digital twins outside of highly controlled and homogeneous environments, such as factories and processing plants introduces new challenges that can be solved with better cloud continuum orchestration, and thus #SwarmchestrateEU promises to reduce the barriers to this evolving concept.
