Since the tricolored bat (Periymotis subflavus) was proposed for listing under the Endangered Species Act, the greater bat community has worked hard to learn about the habitat preferences and requirements of this generalist species. This past summer, SWCA bat #researchers Julia Wilson and Halen Hollibaugh documented tricolored bat maternity roosts in managed silvicultural pine stands. They documented two maternity roost trees within these pine strands, including a mature loblolly pine (Pinus taeda) and a young blackjack oak (Quercus marilandica) in northwestern Louisiana and southeastern Oklahoma. Previously, most research on this species focused on hardwood forests, leaving gaps in knowledge for regions where hardwoods are scarce. These discoveries provide critical data to inform conservation strategies and habitat management for tricolored #bats across their range. #BatConservation #WildlifeResearch Note: all bats were handled with proper permits and personal protective equipment.
