We’re excited to share that our project with Mithun, the University District Bouldering Project, was featured in The Seattle Times! The article dives into the unique process of turning a historic bank into a climbing gym, recreation, and co-working space. It’s a great example of how creative design and structural solutions can breathe new life into unlikely places.
How do you build a climbing gym inside a bank? The Seattle Times explores the Bouldering Project’s latest location, opening this fall in Seattle's University District. This adaptive reuse of the 112-year-old University National Bank Building makes the most of the historic structure’s expansive windows and architectural details. The gym features about 7,000 sf of bouldering terrain with two floors of 14- to 17-foot walls, a yoga studio, fitness space, coworking space, cold plunges and a sauna inside a converted bank vault. Read the story: https://lnkd.in/g7qevhqK It’s been a fun collaboration, and our sixth built location with The Bouldering Project. Kudos to the entire team! SSF is teaming with HYBRID ARCHITECTS LLC on the Songbird apartments! Located on 12th Avenue just south of Seattle University, Songbird is an apartment complex replacing several single-family rental houses. This project is six stories of wood-framed structure over three levels of concrete. The 107,300 SF project has 119 one- and two-bedroom units ranging from 500 – 675 square feet, 2400 SF of commercial space on the ground floor, parking for 46 cars and 102 bikes, and a rooftop amenity space. Unlike many of our other Hybrid/Kamiak projects, this building has two levels of sub-grade parking. Rather than dewatering the site, the team decided to build a matslab foundation, increasing the hydrostatic pressure on all sides of the structure below the water table. 📸: Tom Geeslin Hybrid Architecture
