Synergi reposted this
On the evening of May 11, 1970, a multiple-vortex tornado struck the town of Lubbock, in West Texas. With wind speeds of up to 470 kilometers per hour, the storm quickly devastated the city, killing twenty-six people, injuring more than fifteen hundred, and damaging more than nine thousand structures. On our first visit to the site for the Buddy Holly Hall Performing Arts and Sciences, an empty lot that had borne the brunt of the tornado’s destructive force, the evidence of this disaster’s impact on the community was still palpable some forty-five years later. But the tornado was not the only memory that haunted Lubbock. In 1959 pioneering singer-songwriter Buddy Holly, the city’s most famous homegrown artist, had his life cut short at the height of his fame when he died in a plane crash at age twenty-two while on tour. We designed the public spaces of Buddy Holly Hall with a nod to the powerful impact of these events on the city. We created a seventeen-meter-tall staircase that also serves as a space for theatergoers to gather and socialize. The design of this social stair began as a conventional spiral. But it soon evolved to change in radius as it ascends to allow more overlook and visual connection. As the twisting form developed, its associations with the 1970 tornado became apparent. Expanding as it rises from the ground floor to fill the west side of the lobby, the staircase almost touches the exterior walls before narrowing again at the upper floors. The coiling cantilever of the Tornado Staircase acknowledges the twister as a fact of West Texas life and embodies the lithe energy of the hall’s namesake. Learn more about the Buddy Holly Hall of Performing Arts and Sciences: https://lnkd.in/eJsDmWM9 The Tornado Staircase is featured in Diamond Schmitt’s new book SET PIECES: Architecture for the Performing Arts in Fifteen Fragments which offers visual explorations of the firm’s designs for some of the world’s most remarkable performing arts venues.
