Researchers have constructed a scale model of a modular photonic quantum computer named Aurora, using 35 photonic chips. This model demonstrates the functionality and feasibility of a networked quantum computing system, including key components like squeezers and photon-number-resolving detectors. Aurora successfully synthesizes a cluster state and implements a foliated distance-2 repetition code with real-time decoding. This work addresses optical loss challenges and demonstrates the building blocks for universal and fault-tolerant quantum computing, paving the way for scaling photonic quantum computers for practical applications. https://lnkd.in/dPKKUSCR Citation: Figure 1 from Aghaee Rad, H., Ainsworth, T., Alexander, R.N. et al. In a recent discussion with Semiconductor Engineering on advancements in manufacturing, packaging, and materials, Sander Roosendaal, R&D Director at Synopsys Photonics Solutions, highlighted a key challenge in the field: "The biggest problem is that the designs are all custom in photonics packaging. There is no standardization. About 80% of the cost that goes into the product is packaging and assembly." This conversation with Amkor Technology, Inc., ASE Global, and Promex Industries Inc. sheds light on the technical hurdles and the need for industry-wide collaboration to drive standardization and innovation in photonics. A chiplet supermarket is still years off, but progress is being made on all fronts.
