The Iowa Developmental Disability Council has issued a call to action for the following two bills that affect people living with disabilities. Direct Support Professional (DSP) Classification: Action needed by August 12! The federal Office of Management & Budget (OMB) is considering including the job of Direct Support Professional (DSP) in the list of jobs. This would help states collect data to help them address DSP workforce shortages. Real Jobs, Fair Pay: Iowans with disabilities want real jobs at fair pay. That's what the Transformation to Competitive Integrated Employment Act does. Tell Congress now that Iowans want access to competitive integrated employment opportunities in their communities. Systems Unlimited recently had an empowering day at the Des Moines Capitol where the people we serve advocated for change with various Legislators. The focus was on the proposed “Work Without Worry” legislation, which aims to raise asset limits for Medicaid recipients. This would allow our individuals to save money, work more hours, and not worry about losing their benefits. The stories shared by those we serve were truly eye-opening - from struggling to save for better housing to missing out on visits with family due to financial restrictions. A special thank you to Senators Janice Weiner and Representatives Elizabeth Wilson for listening intently and showing support. And a big thank you to Health and Human Services Committee leaders Ann Meyer and Joel Fry for taking the time to meet with us in a side room - your willingness to listen means everything. Let's keep pushing for positive change together! #WorkWithoutWorry #AdvocacyDay #HCBS #DesMoinesCapitol🏛️💪🌟

Happy Black History Month (BHM)! All of February is Black History Month (BHM), which is the annual celebration of the achievements and lived experiences of Black people in the United States. This event began in 1926 when scholar and historian Carter G. Woodson began "Negro History Week." The highlighted timeframe originally started as the second week in February. That week was chosen specifically so that the dates coincided with Abraham Lincoln and Frederick Douglass's birthdays due to them being American symbols of freedom. The week was at first more academic in nature but developed into a celebration where communities organized events and hosted performances. By the 1960s, the week of celebration grew into an entire month of festivities on various college campuses. Gerald Ford was the first President in 1976 to recognize Black History Month, and that tradition has continued to this day. In recent years, themes have been implemented by the Association for the Study of African American Life and History (ASALH) to highlight specific avenues to celebrate Black history. This year, the theme is "African Americans and the Arts." With this theme in mind, our Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Belonging (DEIB) team will have a few activities that for our staff and the people we serve to enjoy! Some of those activities include free Virtual tours at the African American Museum. Please follow the link below to enjoy the museum and be inspired. https://lnkd.in/gmSFqURJ
