Top three leadership lessons I learned during my time in the war in Gaza. Good leaders make or break the cohesion of a unit: I was fortunate to have an outstanding captain who I’ve known for almost 10 years. He was my team leader when I started reserve duty and became the captain right before the war. He did a great job of keeping the company informed, on track, and busy during times of great uncertainty. This insured that we stayed as a good cohesive fighting unit. Good leaders build dedication in their teams. The company sniper element that I was part of was assigned to one of the teams ( Tsevet) . It was probably the best team in the company. When a directive came to create a sniper team on its own, some of the guys did not want to leave their new team because they felt very connected and dedicated to their team leader and the rest of their team. Good leaders make sure their teams are tasks with the most quality work possible yet makes sure whatever work they have to do (no matter how bland or boring) is done in the best way possible. Why? Because how you do something is how you do EVERYTHING. As snipers we were sometimes tasked with not so glamorous over watch assignments which we knew would not amount to much . Our commanding officer always made sure we did them in the most professional way possible because he knew a rep is a rep. Whether boring or not, we always strived to do it right. We always wanted the work! When we went into Gaza that work ethic paid dividends …. I’m often asked: “Why did you start Tactical Fitness?” My answer: - To create a community of like minded individuals who take their fitness, self-defense, and over all preparedness seriously. - To develop an all encompassing system of training. Tactical Fitness is a play on words. You have to be fit to be tactical, you have to know how to fight to be tactical, and you have to know how to shoot to be tactical. - To improve the quality of life and abilities of my students. - There are many more reasons as well.
