I'm certainly interested in your thoughts and I hope you tell me in the comments below. However, since I have the keyboard, I'll tell you what I think?
People don't believe they can change...SNAP! 🫣
"That's just the way I am," is the phrase that comes to mind.
BullSh#t Leaders! You can CHOOSE to change, if you want.
I've spent many years teaching emotional intelligence courses to thousands of members of the Air Force when I was a Vice Commander and Wing Commander of an Air Force Base, and I continue to teach this essential skill to government employees, corporate leaders, non-profits and academia. The #1 thing I still hear most at the beginning of classes is...."I don't think I can change the way I operate."
So, what does it take?
It ain't sexy....and it sure ain't complicated, leaders.
✅ 𝗜𝘁 𝘁𝗮𝗸𝗲𝘀.....𝗣𝗥𝗔𝗖𝗧𝗜𝗖𝗘!
💪 𝗣𝗿𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗰𝗲...𝗽𝗿𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗰𝗲...𝗽𝗿𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗰𝗲! 💪
Just like anything else. You practice by applying strategies to the components of emotional intelligence you want to grow and also the areas that are considered strengths so you don't atrophy.
I've seen monumental growth, personally, in the component of Self Management, an area of emotional intelligence I chose to work on. And I can tell you, others have noticed and that motivates me to practice even more.
You see, EQ is a flexible skill, neuroplastic....that's fancy speak for 'your brain can grow and connect in new ways in order to operate in a different fashion.' Even when you're 70 years old. It just comes down to your choice, practice, and surrounding yourself with good accountability partners who will tell you to keep practicing or cheer you on when you're succeeding.
🚨Unlike your IQ or your personality, which are set at a very young age, you can always work on your emotional intelligence to improve your self awareness, self management, social awareness and ultimately, better manage the relationships around you. And the funny thing about EQ, when you work on these areas, you see improvements in all kinds of other areas such as: communication, stress tolerance, resilience, moodiness, openness to feedback....the list goes on an on.
👇 So, what's next? Well....
If you're a leader out there who may feel they need a Leadership Jedi ⚔️ to help guide them or their team, you now know who you can call upon. I will warn you, I may show up with a lightsaber.
As a former senior leader in the United States Air Force, I can think of no other skill that was more impactful and critical to leading thousands of teammates than emotional intelligence.
