Friday #warehouseautomation industry musings: Over the past year, here at Talos we have definitely seen a marked increase in the amount of service technician openings at our warehouse automation customers across Europe and the US. Why? With there being fewer greenfield projects out there (construction costs too high, cost of utilities too high, cost of materials etc.), many have had to look closer at retrofit projects and double-down on maintaining their existing installations according to the maintenance contract. What has this meant for Service Techs? It's meant the demand has gone up for sure, but it's worth highlighting that the expectation in the breadth of their skill set has also gone up. Being electrically or mechanically biased (and being able to dabble in the other) is of course a good start, but having both with the ability to troubleshoot/debug the PLC code is the icing on the cake. And if you are working on European machinery in the US, then knowing your way around a Siemens #PLC is required (sorry Rockwell). Service Techs with the mechatronic skill sets tend to be seasoned in the industry yet many have hung up their 'road warrior' boots, not wanting to be on the road 100% of the year anymore. To the road warrior service tech's within the industry who are still going strong, I doth my cap to you, you are a key piece of the puzzle and a reason why your employer has happy/satisfied/repeat customers. Finally, as we enter Q4, and the busiest time of year for e-commerce/retail, what do you think will happen to the demand for service techs? Not just the amount of vacancies, but the workload on these individuals? Talos Automation
