Therapy is a safe space for self discovery, healing of trauma, and personal growth.
About us
Taproot Therapy is a collective of therapists who share resources to create a more efficient way to offer services for self discovery, growth and healing in Birmingham. We offer the most cutting edge neuroscientifically backed treatment for PTSD, trauma and anxiety. We also believe that therapy is about more than reducing symptoms. Taproot Therapy Collective does not use manualized therapy models or formulas for treatment. Instead we try to personally understand each patient and help reconnect them with the journey that their life calls them toward. We make no presumptions about who you are or where you are going. The clinicians at Taproot Therapy only want to help you find yourself and to find the way to where your journey calls you. In addition to providing individual, group and family therapy; Taproot Therapy offers educational classes for students and practitioners of psychotherapy. We also offer classes and talks by business and civic leaders as well as creators in the community. Taproot Therapy offers many other opportunities for community involvement and personal growth. We encourage you to sign up for our mailing list for the latest offerings. GetTherapyBirmingham.com

To understand human nature, we must begin with evolution. In many simple animals, from insects to birds to mammals, a large portion of behavior can indeed be explained through sexual selection - the drive to attract mates, pass on genes, and ensure the survival of offspring. The elaborate tail of the peacock, the melodious songs of birds, the fierce antler battles of stags - all serve the ultimate Darwinian bottom line of reproductive success. For these creatures, Freud's reductive focus on sexuality as the prime mover would be largely accurate. As evolutionary biologist Edward O. Wilson states in his book Sociobiology, "the organism is only DNA's way of making more DNA." Life is in thrall to what Richard Dawkins dubbed "the selfish gene." Even in social species like ants, bees, wolves and lions, the intricate organization of the colony or pack serves the overarching imperative of group survival and reproduction. Altruism and cooperation are not sentimental - they have ruthlessly pragmatic evolutionary payoffs. Sexuality remains the key, even if shaped into complex mating dances and kin-selection strategies. From this vantage point, Freud's theories echo the insights of modern evolutionary theory. The Oedipus complex, with its primal tale of sexual competition between father and son, mirrors the reproductive rivalries found throughout the animal kingdom. Freud's concept of libido as a kind of all-consuming sexual energy finds its parallel in the "selfish gene" relentlessly pursuing its own propagation. #psychotherapy #anthropology #philosophy #Jung #therapy #

Arne Jacobsen’s Egg Chair (1958) is a midcentury icon that has come to symbolize the space-age optimism of its era. Originally designed for the SAS Royal Hotel in Copenhagen, its curvaceous form was inspired by Eero Saarinen’s Womb Chair and the organic shapes of contemporary sculpture. Fusing the lines of the Victorian wingback chair with the organic curves of nature the Egg chair seems to hover and swivels like a planetary sphere. While the wing back chair originated in 17th century England as a way to trap and reflect the light and heat of fireplaces in therapy it can both trap and reflect but also amplify the voice of the patient and the therapist. The Egg’s padded fiberglass shell and semi-reclined posture create a sensation of being gently cupped and supported, while the swivel base allows for easy movement and 360-degree views. The four-star aluminum base enhances the overall feeling of futuristic lightness. In a therapy setting, the Egg chair provides a reassuring sense of enclosure without feeling confining. Its high back and winged sides create privacy and focus, while the swivel mechanism puts the seated in control of their orientation like a retro futuristic captains chair. The padded upholstery and contoured shell hold the body almost tenderly, fostering a sense of safety and care. Joel Blackstock and AliceHawley have the Jacobsen Egg chair in their offices at Taproot

Understanding the Role of Trauma and Inner Parts When couples embark on the journey of marriage counseling, they often wonder whether the process is truly working for them. While some may experience immediate improvements in their relationship, others may feel stuck or unsure if they are making progress. To determine the effectiveness of marriage counseling, it is crucial to understand the role of trauma and how it affects individuals at different stages of their lives, entrenching certain parts of the self. Without addressing these underlying issues, marriage counseling may fail to create lasting change. Signs That Marriage Counseling May Not Be Working Lack of progress: If you have been attending marriage counseling sessions for a while but feel that you are not making any significant progress, it may be a sign that the current approach is not working for you. Persistent reactivity: When couples continue to engage in reactive patterns and struggle to break free from the cycle of negativity, it indicates that the underlying issues have not been adequately addressed. Focusing on external factors: If the focus of marriage counseling remains on external factors, such as financial stress or child-rearing challenges, without delving into the deeper, internal issues, the process may not lead to lasting change. One-sided growth: When one partner begins to heal and grow while the other remains stuck in reactionary patterns, it can lead to a parent-child dynamic that perpetuates disconnection and hinders progress. Divorce: A Confusing and Tiring Process Divorce is a confusing and tiring process, and most people believe they are divorcing for one reason when, in reality, they are divorcing for a completely different reason. Many individuals have one foot out the door in their marriages, but a true divorce is actually against our false self. According to Sue Johnson's work on divorce and marriage counseling in Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT), two inner children often make the majority of marriage contracts. When we marry, for many, the contract is made by their needy and dependent inner child. People often think their relationships will improve once external factors change, such as paying off debt, children getting older, or kids leaving for college. However, this perspective is based on something outside of themselves changing instead of looking within. The Importance of Self-Work Within the Relationship To create lasting change in a marriage, individuals must start working on themselves inside the relationship, changing their patterns and reactions. As one person changes, the relationship has to change. This process is not easy, but it is effective. When children leave for college, couples may find themselves living as roommates or experiencing worse fighting than before. The silence that comes with an empty nest can manifest loneliness in ways that are difficult to imagine when the kids are still at home.
