About us

TAT, a 501c3 organization, is dedicated to raising up a defensive force of transportation professionals across North America to assist law enforcement in the recognition and reporting of human trafficking, in order to aid in the recovery of victims and the arrest of perpetrators. Recognizing that certain industries are uniquely positioned to recognize and report human trafficking, TAT partners with the trucking, truck stop, bus and energy industries to engage their workforces in this fight. TAT also partners with government agencies and law enforcement throughout the U.S. and Canada and builds public-private partnerships between the transportation and energy industries and law enforcement to combat this crime. TAT stands committed to educate, equip, empower and mobilize members of key industries and agencies to combat human trafficking. We educate our partners with industry/agency-specific top-tier training tools to recognize and report this crime and to use a victim-centered approach when engaging with potential victims of trafficking. We equip our partners with training, language, action plans and policies to make a positive impact on this crime. We come alongside our partners and empower them to activate those within their sphere of influence to get involved. We mobilize the largest army of transportation/industry professionals and public sector partners to lend their expertise and their voices to this movement.

October 4th is the National Day of Awareness for Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls in Canada. "Growing out of the Sisters in Spirt initiative, which was led by the Native Women's Association of Canada (NWAC) and funded by Status of Women Canada, October 4 became a day in which eleven Canadian communities held simultaneous vigils to raise awareness and honour the memory of missing and murdered Indigenous women and girls across Canada in 2006. Since then, October 4 has continued to serve as a day to hold vigils and continue to raise awareness." (Source: Sask Culture) In Canada, "Indigenous women, girls, and 2SLGBTQQIA people are murdered, abused, or disappear at shockingly high rates." (Source: Calgary Public Library). Not surprisingly, this population is also highly vulnerable to human trafficking and sexual exploitation (Source: Native Women's Association of Canada). TAT recognizes that in order to effectively combat human trafficking, we must fully understand this crime and the vulnerabilities which traffickers target. TAT is thrilled to announce the winner of our prestigious Harriet Tubman Award, presented by Progressive Insurance! Congratulations to Charles Bernsen, general manager of the Petro in Florence, South Carolina. In October 2018, Bernsen helped a woman who had escaped her human trafficker, who had been selling her for sex. Bernsen is one of 18,000 TravelCenters of America employees who receive TAT's human trafficking training annually. Yesterday, Bernsen received the award, which includes a trophy and check for $5000, from TAT Executive Director Esther Goetsch and TA CEO Debi Boffa at TA Florence, South Carolina. As a surprise, the trafficking survivor whom he helped, Nikki, also attended the award presentation. We are honored to give our Harriet Tubman Award to Charles Bernsen, and grateful to Progressive Commercial for its sponsorship! In September, at the 13th annual International Association of Human Trafficking Investigators Conference in Clearwater, Florida, TAT had the opportunity to network and reconnect with law enforcement, prosecutors and service providers on how to collaboratively work on combating human trafficking. This three-day conference brought together key stakeholders in the anti-trafficking movement on ways to create best practices in combating this crime.
