We just wrapped up our 2nd annual International Tax Student Case Competition and it was was a great success! Hosted in Montreal and held at Gowling WLG on August 17, 2024, students from across the globe competed -- we were proud to welcome teams from the @University of Florida, University of Waterloo, University of the District of Columbia David A. Clarke School of Law (UDC Law), HEC Montréal, Instituto Brasileiro de Direito Tributário, and Universidad Torcuato Di Tella . The Case Competition highlights TEl's commitment to supporting and fostering a strong and diverse student tax community. For many years, TEI has been supporting tax students by providing almost $200,000 in annual scholarships through our chapter network. TEI offers student members opportunities to network and engage in student activities, including regular webinars on topics of interest to tax students. Thank you to all of the student participants, mentors, judges, staff, TEl student volunteers, and countless others for supporting and believing in this unique initiative. A special thank you to the chair of the case competition Josephine L. As we wrap up the 2024 U.S. International Tax Course, we extend our sincere thanks to all participants for their engagement and contributions throughout the week. Wednesday: Adam Halpern & William Skinner examined Subpart F and GILTI, focusing on anti-deferral regimes, and provided an in-depth look at Earnings & Profits (E&P) and its implications for U.S. tax law. Thursday: Highlights included Jeff Romero & Sam Kaywood discussing Sections 367 and 7874 on international reorganizations and inversions, J. Brian Davis & Nicholas Mowbray covering Transfer Pricing under Section 482 with recent case law, and Nicholas Cosgrove, CPA & Brendan Sinnott addressing Documentation and Information Reporting for Foreign Affiliates, including Forms 5471 and 5472. On Tuesday, August 13, TEI welcomed Josephine L. (Josie) Scalia to the role of International President for the 2024-2025 year, succeeding outgoing International President, Sandhya Edupuganty. Josie shared her vision for the Institute, which focused on Branding, Education, Value/ Advocacy, and Infrastructure and attendees (and their attendant Goal Leaders) had a productive workshop ideating on these initiatives. Attendees participated in roundtables focused on Chapter and Committee Challenges and Burning Tax Questions which delved into what’s on in-house tax professionals’ minds and how fellow TEI members are approaching and solving these issues. Overall, this year’s AMM was outstanding, with active participation from members, productive conversations that will move TEI forward, connecting with friends, and having some fun at the Santa Fe School of Cooking where members and guests learned how to prepare authentic Southwest cuisine and enjoyed the fruits of their labor! We are already looking forward to hosting next year’s meeting, to be held in Burlington, VT! Hoping to see everyone there! #tei #tax

🌟 Exciting News! 🌟 We’ve kicked off our International Tax Course with a deep dive into international tax law fundamentals! 🌍📘 Monday: Our first session, led by Tatsuro Yamamura & Daniel Bleiberg , covered "Development of International Tax Law & Policy," highlighting key principles and U.S. international tax law. The second session, with Natalia Benedetti, CPA & Mark Bernstein, focused on "Sections 861-863: Sourcing Income & Expenses," clarifying rules and their implications. Our welcome reception set the stage for a fantastic start! Tuesday: The morning session, led by Dan Stern & Elaine Wilkins, explored "The Foreign Tax Credit," and the evening session with Jonathan D. Lockhart & Brian Moore tackled "Inbound Issues: U.S. Taxation of Nonresident Companies." We concluded with insights on "Foreign Currency Issues," including Section 987 by Laura Valestin & Adam Williams. Wednesday: Wednesday’s sessions at our International Tax Course were both detailed and insightful. Kelli Wooten & Laurie Hatten-Boyd started with FATCA, Withholding Tax, and reporting requirements for foreign investments, covering outbound U.S. cross-border payments and compliance issues. Tax Executive Institutes Annual Meeting of Members is in full swing in picturesque Santa Fe, NM. This yearly event includes Executive Committee and Board of Directors meetings focused on governance issues, the election of officers, the election of past presidents to the Board of Directors, the certification of chapter representatives, and setting the Institute’s yearly budget and the strategic direction for FY 2024-25. Incoming International President, Josephine L. (Josie) Scalia, shared her four goals and initiatives with Goal Leader and EC Liaison/ Los Angeles, Linda Kim, MBT shown leading her goal workshop on how to expand participation in TEI’s advocacy and committee programs. Attendees enjoyed multiple networking opportunities and outgoing International President, Sandhya Edupuganty shared a heartful cheers and thank you to Executive Committee members for their support during her tenure last year. The meeting also included an insightful technical session on the current political and economic climate from Capitol Tax Partners, Katherine Monge', former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s chief policy advisor on tax, trade, economic and budgetary issues. #tei #tax
