“Let the four winds speak…Ngāi Tahu, we must come to you.” - Kiingi Tuheitia Our Board Chair Elle Archer is representing our hapori at Te Pūnuiotaka today where the mauri of Hui-ā-Motu is carried on. The theme of the kōrero is about indigenous economics and tribal instituion-building. As we did at the start of the year, we are there to listen, connect and bring the mātauranga back to our hapori. Last Thursday myself and the team at Ako Academy had the privilege of attending the first ever online kura reo held by Te Hapori Matihiko! Mīharo katoa ngā akoranga - it was awesome! The day started of with a session on the importance of te reo Māori. We learnt that by 2050, 50% of the workforce in Aotearoa will be Māori and Pasifika. What does that mean? It means that in order for the organisations in Aotearoa to attract top talent, they need to be aware, educated, and ready for the diversity coming their way. It truly is an honour to be supporting organisations in this area. Another highlight of the day was the language planning session with Dr Vincent Olsen-Reeder. Even as reo Māori educator it's important to be strategic with your use and implementation of te reo Māori outside the classroom. Quite often kaiako are busy sharing mātauranga (knowledge) with everyone else and we forget about our own kete, so I really enjoyed my day filling my kete. Nō reira, ko tēnei te mihi ki Te Hapori Matihiko i tō koutou whakarite, whakatū i tēnei kaupapa! Can't wait until the next one!

Kura Reo ki Hangarau (organised by Te Hapori Matihiko) made me realise that the hangarau dictionaries cant keep up with all the new phrases that are coming out. Also, some of the translations in the dictionaries sound really weird. We did this exercise with Te Mihinga Komene where we got to come up with our own translations. I created the first translation I think it was either Laughton Matthews or Asha Scott-Morris that created the second one. Can you guess what the reo Pākehā is? Do you guys have any other hangarau phrases you have created?

Tīhei mauri ora! From beginners to fluent speakers, our hapori came together last week for our first-ever Kura Reo Hangarau! 🙌🏽 We connected online to wānanga and whakakaha our reo in a tech-focused, immersion environment. Four kaiako, four taumata reo and four rotating sessions! Here’s a quick-rundown of the day: 📝 Dr Vincent Olsen-Reeder led an insightful session on language planning, equipping us with strategies to integrate te reo into our everyday lives. 🖼️ Rosalie’s workshop brought kīwaha to life, showing us how to creatively apply these idioms through creating our own memes. 👩🏽🏫 Te Mihinga levelled up our tech puna kupu, challenging us to create kupu hou, rotarota and kīwaha for tech we use every day! He tauira: kua tio tō mata - your face is frozen 😂 🗣️ Aperahama Hurihanganui’s session took us through the tīkanga and practice of mihimihi, sharing some tools for crafting a good mihi that talks the talk. A mihi to our guest speaker Janelle, our kaiako for their guidance, and to Te Mātāwai for supporting this kaupapa. We will be sending a survey to all of our attendees - we appreciate your feedback and would love to hear your whakaaro. This won’t be the last Kura Reo Hangarau! We look forward to delivering more based on your insights. It was a much-needed wānanga, and we’ll be back next year 💜 E mihi ana ki te hapori nei i hāpai ana i te kaupapa. To everyone who joined us – we can’t wait to do it again! 💡🌐 Engaging Well Limited Katie Brown Maryanne Madden Elle Archer Beau Johns Zoë Liddell Tevan Brandt
