According to the 2022 National Survey on Drug Use and Health, 1 in 7 Americans admitted to using illicit drugs in the past month. Of that number, 44% were employed full-time. Now more than ever, keeping a drug-free workplace is vital to ensuring the safety of employees and clients. Here are the three most common signs of a SUD to keep an eye out for: 💊 Changes in appearance. If there’s a prolonged and noticeable shift in a person’s attire, grooming, and other physical features, this could indicate a struggle with substance use. 💊 Changes in behavior. A prolonged and significant shift in behavior, like someone going from extremely friendly to extremely reserved and short, could be another sign of a SUD. 💊 Changes in work performance. Have you ever heard of Delta-8 THC, or “diet cannabis?” This THC variant is becoming more and more widespread, and it poses a few risks: 🔺 Delta-8 is completely synthetic and the process for its creation is completely unregulated. There’s no way to be sure any Delta-8 product is safe from contaminants and harmful chemicals. 🔺 Since it’s synthesized from CBD, Delta-8 exists in a legal loophole that allows it to be sold and consumed even in the most anti-cannabis states. 🔺 Due to its relative newness, Delta-8 metabolites don’t always get caught in drug tests, meaning D-8 users can get high without any workplace consequences.

Despite its widespread use, many people don’t understand how drug testing works or the different types of tests available. We’ve got a lightning round of facts to get you in the know: 🔬 Drug testing does NOT test for impairment the way an alcohol test can; whether someone smoked weed a week ago or right before their shift, depending on the type of test, they would still test positive. 🔬 Urine-based drug tests are arguably the most common type. They can catch drug use that occurred anywhere from a few days to a couple of weeks prior to the test. 🔬 Hair drug tests have the longest detection window, sometimes being able to detect drug use from years before the test. 🔬 Oral fluid tests have the quickest detection windows, often being able to catch drug use within just 15 minutes, and they’re much harder to cheat than urine tests.
