Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer-related deaths worldwide. Data has shown that early detection and reduced mortality rates are possible using low-dose CT (LDCT) scans; however, LDCT has known drawbacks of high costs and radiation exposure. VA researchers in partnership with the University of Maryland have developed a non-invasive, cost-effective method to aid in lung cancer diagnosis. The simple assay could be used to more accurately prescreen high-risk patients for early-stage lung cancer. VA researchers have identified and validated three new compounds that decrease lymphoma cell viability with potential to overcome resistance to treatment. In 2024, researchers predict that 80,000+ people in the U.S. will be diagnosed with Non-Hodgkin's lymphoma, one of the most common types of cancer. If commercialized, the VA-discovered compound could deliver improved treatment and outcomes. Army researchers have invented a machine learning technique that improves the ability to identify similar geo-located regions. While the technique is particularly useful in soil morphology, it can be applied to any dataset that includes geo-located information; for example, the technique could be used to classify regional zones for climate change susceptibility or assist real estate agents by finding similar houses or neighborhoods within a large dataset.
