Global poverty is a multifaceted issue, an issue TechnoServe is committed to solving. For International Day of the Eradication of Poverty, we stand with communities and partners worldwide, aiming to address poverty's complex causes through sustainable solutions. Today, over half of the world’s population lives on less than $6.85 a day, facing limited access to food, education, and healthcare. Poverty isn’t just about income, it’s about opportunity and access. Smallholder farmers and local entrepreneurs are building skills, connections, and confidence to transform their lives and livelihoods. TechnoServe works alongside them to create a poverty-free future. Read our full guide on understanding global poverty and the strategies to combat it. https://hubs.li/Q02TPbNX0

Last week the Mujeres CAFE photo exhibit "Visual Narratives of empowerment in the Peruvian jungle" was inaugurated at the Beneficencia de Lima by TechnoServe and Asusmarcaspe. The exhibit contained more than 60 photos taken by rural women from coffee growing communities in Huanuco and San Martin as part of their leadership journey through the Mujeres Cafe program. Funded by the Starbucks Foundation and implemented by TechnoServe, Mujeres CAFE was a leadership program designed to create the space for rural women to revive their inner power, reconnect with their inner voice, and look to the future of their coffee farms and communities with confidence and determination. PhotoVoice was incorporated into this program because it enabled women to explore their leadership and provided an outlet for them to articulate it. With cameras in their hands, women decided where to point them, what they wanted us to see. And by crafting a caption for their photos, they told us how they understand the world around them. A huge thank you to the team at Asusmarcaspe and to Deflina, Elsa, Yolanda, Lucy, and Lilia who guided us through the photo exhibit. #MujeresRurales #RuralWomen

We celebrate the many farmers we work with around the world, building more resilient #foodsystems and building brighter futures. #WorldFoodDay #solutionstopoverty
Tomorrow is #WorldFoodDay—an opportunity to reflect on a question that touches us all: How do we secure safe and nutritious #food for everyone? Hunger and food accessibility don’t have a single solution, and progress requires us to address systemic challenges and to support the resilience of smallholder farmers. From farmers in Africa improving their yields and finding innovative ways of adapting to climate change, we’re constantly reminded that solutions exist—but they require commitment, collaboration, and support from all levels, from policy to grassroots. Every day, I’m inspired by the farmers we work with—people who are not just growing crops, but growing opportunities for their families and communities. Their efforts remind us that with the right support, more resilient #FoodSystems are within reach. 🌱 Picture 1: Geeta Devi, a vegetable farmer in Bihar, India, harvesting cauliflower—showing the power of local innovation. 🌿 Picture 2: Lesbia Ludia Juárez, a smallholder farmer in Guatemala, connecting to new markets to sustain her community. 🍊 Picture 3: Mwangangi Mdicii, Kenya, with his solar-powered fridge—reducing food waste and boosting income. 🍫 Picture 4: Emanuel Fianko, harvesting cocoa in Ghana, supporting his local economy. Real change means working together to tackle the bigger challenges. What gives you hope when you think about the future of food? Share below! 👇

Shanthi used to see coffee as just another crop her family grew to make ends meet. But today, she’s transformed from a smallholder farmer to a coffee expert, evaluating her own beans and ensuring they meet specialty coffee standards. She learned how to taste, assess, and process her coffee, gaining the confidence to negotiate better prices. This newfound knowledge has empowered her to invest in her education, manage her household finances, and even compete in coffee brewing championships. Shanthi’s story is just one example of how smallholder farmers—especially women—can transform entire communities with access to new opportunities. By participating in TechnoServe programs that provide them with the skills, connections and confidence to grow their incomes, over 10,000 tribal coffee farmers in Andhra Pradesh are transforming their lives and livelihoods. https://hubs.li/Q02T9Rv60

Today, on #InternationalDayOfTheGirl, we stand with girls worldwide, recognizing their potential as powerful agents of change. At TechnoServe, we fight poverty by empowering girls in low-income communities, equipping them with the skills, resources, and connections needed to build brighter futures. When girls can pursue education, grow their own businesses, and lead within their communities, they drive economic growth and help lift entire communities out of poverty. We believe that everyone deserves the chance to build a better future. Together, we can create a world where every girl has the opportunity to succeed and inspire change.

Exciting insights from Katarina Kahlmann, TechnoServe's Chief Transformation Officer, from a recent conversation with Nobel Laureate Michael Kremer.
🏆"Innovation is Feeding the World"— speaking with Nobel Laureate Michael Kremer🏆 With the 2024 #NobelPrize Laureates being announced this week, we had the privilege of talking to Michael Kremer, a (previous) Nobel Laureate in Economics, who highlights a powerful truth: innovation solves our greatest global challenges. Consider this: Since 1960, the world’s population has nearly tripled, yet the amount of arable land has barely changed. How do we still feed billions? Innovation. Through breakthroughs in agriculture, crop yields have tripled, ensuring food production can keep up with population growth. But today’s challenge lies in access and nutrition—not availability. Kremer’s work on climate change, food security, and public health is more relevant than ever. At #TechnoServe, we are scaling some of his favorite innovations, such as biological fertilizers and digital agricultural tools, to improve global food systems. Which innovation stands out as the most transformative? According to Kremer, it's AI-driven weather forecasting. Shoutout to #Norrsken portfolio company #Ignitia! Their forecasts are helping millions adapt to climate change, with the potential to reach billions (!). As the 2024 Nobel announcements draw near, it’s an exciting time to reflect on the profound impact that innovation can have—not only on economic growth, but on building a more sustainable, equitable world. Regarding this year’s Economics prize, my money (or at least hope) is on Sir Partha Dasgupta, another economist focusing on people and planet. Stay tuned for the announcement on October 14.🤞🏼

In Kenya, 92% of plastic is mismanaged, with only 7% properly recycled. But duka (small shop) owners are changing the narrative. Through the Smart Duka program, they’re receiving hands-on waste management training, equipping them to run cleaner, more sustainable businesses while playing a key role in reducing waste and promoting a greener future for Kenya. Special thanks to our donor Moody's Foundation and project partners TakaTaka Ni Mali and Mr. Green Trading Africa Kenya Ltd. for their invaluable support. 🌍 https://hubs.li/Q02RYy8-0
