This afternoon, staff from across The Junction came together to plant over 200 trees in Coulby Newham, in partnership with Tees Valley Wildlife Trust By taking time away from our usual roles, we not only gave back to our local community and wildlife, but also embraced the benefits of spending time in nature for our own wellbeing. 🌱 Why this matters: ✔ Boosting biodiversity – creating vital habitats for local wildlife ✔ Improving air quality – helping to make our environment healthier ✔ Supporting mental and physical wellbeing – the outdoors is a powerful space for reflection and connection As part of our commitment to sustainability and staff wellbeing, this initiative also contributes to our Investors in the Environment (iiE) award, reinforcing our dedication to positive environmental and social impact. 📢Calling all teachers👩🏫📢 This is your reminder that Stronger Shores has launched two online curriculum-based toolkits for teachers of Key Stage 2 (Years 3-6) and Key Stage 3 (Years 7-9) that are designed with coast-based curriculum links throughout, drawing predominately upon science and geography. Lesson plans include workshop videos, presentations, quizzes and activities which can be carried out in the classroom with low cost materials, as well as tips on how pupils and schools can make a difference to our coastal communities. Nestled between the industrial landscapes of the #TeesValleys power lines, roads and towering chimneys, are some amazing and significant wetland areas that play a crucial role in maintaining the region's ecological balance. One of these is #CoathamMarsh, which is situated near the mouth of the #RiverTees, characterised by its extensive reedbeds, which are a vital component of the wetland ecosystem. Reedbeds, such as those found at Coatham Marsh, are highly productive habitats that provide a unique environment for a wide range of plant and animal species. Coatham Marsh also plays a critical role in the global carbon cycle. The dense vegetation of these areas acts as a carbon sink, absorbing and storing carbon dioxide from the atmosphere. This helps to mitigate the effects of climate change by reducing the amount of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere. At Coatham Marsh, conservation efforts are underway to protect and restore the reedbeds. Including some significant work by our wardens and volunteers, involving the removal of scrub, cutting back of reeds to create open water for wildfowl, management of the water table to mitigate drought and creating muddy areas for wading birds. 2025 is a really exciting year for Open Country! As well as celebrating 35 years of helping people with disabilities to access and enjoy the countryside, we're expanding our reach and our services. Our team took a trip north yesterday to see our new hub - in Teesside. We've found an office space with our friends at Tees Valley Wildlife Trust, and we can't wait to start running our services later this year.
