Humans are a part of nature — so restoring our forests is about more than just planting trees. Rebuilding an ecosystem sustainably means addressing the needs of the human communities that coexist with the forest — such as shelter, food, and safety. In the Philippines, Terraformation is embarking on an ambitious new restoration project in partnership with CCCO2, a Philippine reforestation and conservation company founded in 2018. As the biodiverse forest is restored to this former colonial cattle ranch, agroforestry will enable the local Indigenous communities to grow native crops like cocoa, hemp, and millet. A few facts about this project: • 1,000 hectares, with 12,000 hectare expansion potential • 508,000 tonnes of CO2 sequestered over 40 years • Environmental co-benefits include improved water quality, reduced risk of wildfires, and enhanced erosion and flood control • Agroforestry areas will integrate crops of cocoa, hemp, and adlai (millet) • Equal employment opportunities, including for women in leadership positions We're excited to begin the restoration of this beautiful mountain region. How can we advance sustainable development across Asia? Some ways forward include: 🌱 Reforestation—a unique approach by Terraformation 📝 Reporting on greenhouse gas emissions These and more were discussed in a #JFF2024 session, which weighed in on immediate action (e.g. purchasing offsets) vs. long-term investments in sustainable technologies. The first global mangrove assessment for IUCN’s Red List of Ecosystems shows over half of the world’s mangrove ecosystems are at risk of collapse. Mangroves are threatened by deforestation, development, pollution, and dam construction, but the risk to these ecosystems is increasing due to sea-level rise and the increased frequency of severe storms associated with hashtag#climate change. In the absence of hashtag#conservation action, about 7,065 km2 of mangroves will be lost, and some 16% submerged underwater. Restoration, the establishment of coastal protection areas and community engagement are some of the strategies we can use to help protect these environments. Learn more http://buff.ly/3UUY9hx

Where would our forests be without our pollinators? On #WorldBeeDay, learn how you can help keep your local bee population healthy by planting a bee garden, limiting your use of pesticides, and taking part in citizen science campaigns to monitor pollinator populations. (It's easy! Learn more here: https://lnkd.in/en3pXsdi )
🐝 Happy #WorldBeeDay! Shoutout to the buzzing bees that help keep our ecosystems thriving! 🌼🌳 Forests provide essential habitats for our pollinators. By protecting our forests, we’re ensuring a safe haven for these vital little workers. Let's continue to support healthy forests and healthy bees for the future of our planet! 🐝 Learn more about why bees are so important from our friends and partners at The Woodland Trust: https://lnkd.in/e2UrWaUQ 📸 Alyssa Hussey

As 2024 emerges as yet another record-breaking year for wildfires, it's important to understand the root causes of this growing problem — and what we can do to address it. "Indonesia was expected to have a terrible fire season during these extremely hot months, but it didn’t. Some experts say the country’s efforts to fight deforestation are part of the reason its forests were less vulnerable than expected." https://lnkd.in/gS-c3Bv8

"Without inclusive and gender-responsive planning and safeguarding mechanisms, the livelihoods of millions of people who depend on these forests are at risk. Rural people are too often excluded from — and at times even seen as a threat to — conservation efforts." Don't miss this great info and on-demand access to the webinar by Terraformation, MORFO, and Restor!
The success of forest restoration projects typically depends on the right interplay between all stakeholders: local communities, investors, project developers, implementers, and global institutions. But above all, restoration projects are most likely to last if informed by - and rooted in - the local context. Exploring the common challenges and nuances of quality forest restoration projects, Morfo, working on the large-scale restoration of native forest ecosystems, organized a joint webinar last month that brought together expertise and experiences from three leading organizations: MORFO, Terraformation, and Restor. Mick van Eck Santos, Regional Engagement Lead of Restor, shares key takeaways from the discussion: What is a high-quality forest restoration project? Restoration projects benefit when Indigenous and local knowledge of the land is honored. But for too long, Indigenous Peoples were left out of decisions about land use—even for conservation projects that involve the land on which they have lived for generations. Free, prior and informed consent (FPIC) is a process that honors the right to self-determination. It's an important part of any reforestation project that will impact Indigenous lands or communities. Thanks to Yishan Wong & the Terraformation team for the collaboration on this #Forests4Climate think piece. It is really vital that we have the right frame of reference for prioritizing actions in our forests that will have climate change benefits.
Reducing emissions alone is not enough—we must also tackle existing carbon levels in the atmosphere. Through extensive research, nature-based solutions have demonstrated their potential in carbon drawdown. Recent studies, even from noted skeptics, reaffirm the indispensable role of forests in mitigating climate change while safeguarding communities and biodiversity.
