Test & Learn Community (TLC)

Data Infrastructure and Analytics

A place for people to teach, learn, and converse about analytics & experimentation - no sales or solicitation allowed.

About us

The year was 2012. The view was of the Pacific. The venue: the xChange Conference hosted by Semphonic where I had been invited to attend as a huddle leader by Gary Angel. The conversation topic: what else? Experimentation. But, mid-conversation (mid-revelation, really), their time was up and they needed to move to the next “huddle.” An audible groan of disappointment arose. So I encouraged everyone to continue the conversation via email. From that email chain, we decided to have a monthly teleconference—I called it a “tele-huddle". Eventually, I decided to expand to include others and shifted to Zoom. Each month, we'd meet on Zoom to support each other with whatever topics we were working on in our respective jobs - sometimes with planned topics, sometimes just mentoring each other. Always with the purpose of teaching and learning. People dropped out and others joined along the way with the size of the community staying around 20-40 people for the first several years until we decided to start the Slack community and change the format to invite industry leaders to present and have live recorded panel discussions. (Shout out to our friends at measure.chat and the analyticshour.io for those inspirations.) The one thing that has always remained true to the original intention of the community - the TLC was designed as a place for people to teach, learn, and converse. And it remains so today. No sales or solicitation of members is ever allowed and all questions are welcome and encouraged. The environment should be welcoming and no one should ever feel worried that they'll get bullied for asking a "dumb question". That's not what the TLC is. Everyone here wants to help - and if anyone is not helpful, they'll be invited to leave. Because of the welcoming and encouraging atmosphere of sharing and learning, the TLC has grown to a community of well over 1,000 members and is continuing to grow. Members include industry leaders and those just getting started from research, an

A few weeks ago I made this ditty featuring Aleksander Fabijan for the Experimentation island playlist, and I'm excited to finally release it. You all know I've been Microsoft kick for a while with Microsoft Clarity, so i'm very excited to write my first song for a Microsoft employee. I really had to tell myself no 8 times to doing a Alexander Hamilton parody but I'm happy where this netted out. Aleks seems more like a Bowie guy anyway. This cosmic parody focuses on the right way to pace yourself while building an experimentation program Aleks will be doing a talk on Growing experimentation: it takes a flywheel to fly. This talk will focus on transforming software companies into experimental laboratories. Blast off! Want to know more about Experimentation Island. Hit up Kelly Wortham and Ton Wesseling for deets! Want to get into the habit of posting regularly on LinkedIn, grow your audience, attend a free workshop from Daphne Tideman and get feedback from a great panel? Oh..and a chance at winning $2k. This is the post for you! Through my work and at events I am always meeting incredibly talented women who hesitate to share, often questioning whether they have anything valuable to say, or worrying about saying the wrong thing. Even when you know what you want to say and how to say it, fitting it into your schedule when it can take a little while to pay off can be a challenge. That’s why I’m excited to announce the Convert.com x Women in Experimentation Upskilling Competition. This competition is designed to encourage women to share their insights and experiences consistently. This is our second year running this competition and along with this post I've included a testimonial from last year's winner Patrizia Giampà! Whether you're just starting out or have been in the field for years, this is an opportunity to push yourself as part of a team of participants, guided by the judges and myself along the way. There are two categories: Rising Star Contributor (less than 3 years' experience) Experienced Contributor (more than 3 years' experience) For each category, the prize includes: - $1,000 fund - A place on Erin Weigel's course worth $1,000 (more info here: http://bit.ly/goodabdesign - the course has been organised by Kelly as part of Test & Learn Community (TLC) learning groups and starts in Jan 2025) The goal of this competition is simple: to get more women sharing their unique perspectives on LinkedIn. Participants will be required to post four times every two weeks, and will receive personalised feedback from our judging panel comprised of Lucia van den Brink ✨️, Carmen A., Luiza de Lange and Daphne Tideman. Key dates: Application deadline: 18th October 2024 Competition: 21st October to 8th December 2024 Winners announced: 16th December 2024 Link to be a part of this will be in the comments! • Every once in a while, there's that one speaker that is just a joy to invite back - both because they educate you and because you have fun with them. For me, that person is Conductrics INC co-founder Matt Gershoff. Matt will educate the TLC community on Privacy by Design and AB Testing this Friday. He's planning to cover: 1. The 7 principles of Privacy by Design 2. Principle 2: Privacy by Default & Data Minimization 3. Intro of K-anonymization as privacy-preserving approach 4. Review of common tasks for A/B testing (and will make some controversial claims that most of the stats used reduce to different forms of OLS regression...) 5. Show the equivalence of OLS results on a micro level (user) & equivalence class (aggregate) data 6. List the benefits of Data Minimization with Equivalence class data structures If you're like me and really don't know what like 4 of the 6 of these mean, come get your edjumacation on this Friday, 11 October: 9 AM Pacific | 10 AM Mountain | 11 AM Central | 12 PM Eastern | 5 PM London Link to Join the TLC: https://lnkd.in/gm9w4Ru9 Add event to calendar: https://lnkd.in/g98rtr-s #privacybydesign #abtesting #measure #mattgershoffed Photo: Kelly (yet again) learning from Matt 😍

The Test & Learn Community (TLC) was born at Gary Angel 's X Change Conference. I didn't know it at the time, but so was my future career as a consultant and conference organizer myself. Here I am, nearly 15 years after attending that first X Change Conference, working with Ton Wesseling , a man I respect and admire (and have a hell of a good time with!), to bring Conversion Hotel to the US as Experimentation island! Sometimes, it feels like a dream. If you were ever lucky enough to attend the X Change Conference in the US or Conversion Hotel in the Netherlands... you have an idea why I'm so excited. New updates on the website this week! I hope you'll check them out, get excited yourself, and join us on the Island!

Of all the things I’ve worked on in my career, few have given me more satisfaction than the X Change Conference. Building a conference around conversation among peers always felt to me like the best kind of conference. And delivering that within a place and location that made people feel great ended up creating something a lot of people thought was special. My good friend and long-time colleague Kelly Wortham his bringing something similar to life with the Experimentation Island. It’s a small, peer-focused experience in a really cool location with a core set of great people to help set the conversation. Few subjects reward sharing and collaboration like experimentation (because no matter how expert you are, the range of possibly interesting experiments is infinite and, like the universe, expanding rapidly). If you’re not getting much value from your existing conference schedule, check it out. I think you’ll find that the joys and learnings of a small, carefully curated, conversation-based conference make all your other conference events seem kind of pedestrian. https://lnkd.in/gD2eAt-d
