We left #BioTechX in Basel energized by the many face-to-face conversations we had with customers and industry colleagues in the life sciences. We also left well-fed from our leadership dinner with our partners at Databricks. Three of the conference's big themes for us: 1. 𝗔 𝗿𝗼𝗯𝘂𝘀𝘁 𝗱𝗮𝘁𝗮 𝗳𝗼𝘂𝗻𝗱𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗶𝘀 𝗰𝗿𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝘁𝗼 𝗴𝗲𝗻𝗲𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗺𝗲𝗮𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴𝗳𝘂𝗹 𝘀𝗰𝗶𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗳𝗶𝗰 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗯𝘂𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗲𝘀𝘀 𝗼𝘂𝘁𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗲𝘀, but many organizations still lack that foundation. The progress we and our partners are making to industrialize scientific data and AI will go a long way toward helping the industry bridge the “data utility gap.” 2. AI is transitioning along the familiar hype cycle from the peak of inflated expectations to the trough of disillusionment. Getting by on vibes and cool demos won’t cut it anymore. 𝗔𝗜 𝘂𝘀𝗲 𝗰𝗮𝘀𝗲𝘀 𝗺𝘂𝘀𝘁 𝗯𝗲 𝗯𝘂𝗶𝗹𝘁 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝗮 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗱𝘂𝗰𝘁 𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗮𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆, focused on utility and repeatability, and quickly move from demo to production. The slope of enlightenment is next. 3. Beyond the impact AI is having on accelerating drug development (i.e., failing earlier), 𝗽𝗿𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗲𝗿𝘀 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝗯𝗲𝗴𝗶𝗻𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗼 𝗳𝗶𝗴𝘂𝗿𝗲 𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝘄𝗮𝘆𝘀 𝘁𝗼 𝘂𝘀𝗲 𝗔𝗜 𝘁𝗼 𝗶𝗺𝗽𝗿𝗼𝘃𝗲 𝗱𝗿𝘂𝗴𝘀 (i.e., enhancing their quality). We’re excited to follow that trend. Some highlights from the “overheard” file: “Future leaders in our industry will live at the intersection of science, data, and business outcomes. We call them Sciborgs.” - our co-founder Siping Wang during his rousing keynote “Hiding all the complexity of instrument integration and accelerating data onboarding are the multibillion-dollar problems in our industry.” - an exec at a global crop sciences firm “AI is today – who doesn‘t leverage it now will be left behind” - Patrick Moeller, CIO, Bayer “Giving data scientists access to deep scientific data is a long overdue step forward for the industry.” Michael Sanky, Global Industry Lead for Healthcare & Life Sciences at Databricks “We’re excited to hear how you can help us capture bioprocess data from different instruments and harmonize it into a single dashboard.” - a data science leader for a global pharma “There is no AI strategy without a data strategy.” - Alistair Hankin, Industry Principal, Life Sciences, Snowflake [on the flip side] “AI washing” became an issue in the industry.” - Venkatesh Moktali, PhD, Director of Product Management, QIAGEN.
