Eradicating Infectious Disease
About us
Texas Biomedical Research Institute (Texas Biomed) is one of the world's leading independent biomedical research institutions dedicated to advancing health worldwide through innovative biomedical research. Texas Biomed, formerly the Southwest Foundation for Biomedical Research, partners with hundreds of researchers and institutions around the world, targeting advances in the fight against cardiovascular disease, psychiatric disorders, Tuberculosis, AIDS, hepatitis, malaria, parasitic infections, Ebolavirus, Marburg virus and a host of other infectious diseases. The Institute is located on a 200-acre campus on the northwest side of San Antonio, Texas. Its staff of more than 300 employees includes a multidisciplinary team of doctoral-level scientists who lead more than 200 major research projects in the Institute's Scientific Programs; Host-Pathogen Interactions, Disease Intervention & Prevention and Population Health. Texas Biomed is the site of the Southwest National Primate Research Center and the world's largest colony of baboons for biomedical research, including a unique pedigreed colony of approximately 2,500 nonhuman primates. The Institute enjoys a distinguished history in the innovative, humane and appropriate use of nonhuman primates for biomedical research. The Institute also is home to the nation's only privately-owned biosafety level 4 (BSL-4) laboratory. This maximum containment lab allows for safe research on lethal pathogens for which there are no treatments or vaccines, including potential bio-terror agents and emerging diseases. The AT&T Genomics Computing Center houses the world's largest computer cluster for human genetic and genomic research. This high-performance computing facility allows scientists to search for disease-influencing genes at record speed. For more information on Texas Biomed, visit us at www.TxBiomed.org

ICYMI: The full season of "Tom Slick, Mystery Hunter" - a dramatized podcast about Texas Biomed's founder Tom Slick, Jr. - is out now. The 8-episode series features Owen Wilson voicing Tom Slick and Sissy Spacek voicing his daughter. We are especially excited to highlight the final Fact v. Fiction episode, which reveals what the writers made up to weave an enthralling tale versus the real facts of Tom's life. The truth might surprise you! The episode features interviews with members of Tom's family -- niece/biographer Catherine Nixon Cooke and son Charles Slick -- as well as Texas Biomed President/CEO Larry Schlesinger and Southwest Research Institute President Adam Hamilton. We are delighted that the podcast is sharing Tom's enduring legacy on human health by investing in #science and establishing several research institutes here in #SanAntonio. Tom was not just a visionary with big ideas – he acted on them. He made them happen. We at Texas Biomed strive every day to continue in his footsteps. Enjoy the listen! #SATX #visionary https://lnkd.in/gwHcKrUe

A human cell model of the lung's most important immune cell, the #alveolar #macrophage, developed at Texas Biomed is being used by other researchers around the world, and they are making some pretty exciting discoveries! Recently, collaborators were able to determine exactly how the immune-signaling protein, TNF, is critical to protect against #tuberculosis, but not for other respiratory illnesses. This finding is causing scientists to rethink TNF's role in the body. The discovery was made possible through a combination of genetic studies of real patients and several cellular models, including the alveolar macrophage-like (AML) model developed by Texas Biomed Professor, President/CEO Larry Schlesinger and Staff Scientist Susanta Pahari. Read more about the research recently published in Nature and about the AML model! w/ Anna-Lena Neehus, Laboratory of Human Genetics of Infectious Diseases, The Rockefeller University & University of Antioquia #innovation #cellmodel #research #science #collaboration https://lnkd.in/geimJeaU

Are you a scientist studying #tuberculosis or a student interested in #TBresearch or #publichealth? A healthcare provider, family member or patient advocate working with patients with #TB? We invite you to join us at the IN-TRAC Patient Conference to hear directly from families affected by TB. Gain insights and inspiration from parents of adolescents with TB and young adults living with TB. You’ll learn about how they deal with the stigma surrounding their diagnosis, their daily routines and more. The IN-TRAC Patient Conference will take place Oct. 31 at noon at Texas Biomed in San Antonio. Attend in person or virtually. Hosted by Larry Schlesinger, Texas Biomed; Blanca I Restrepo, The University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston (UTHealth Houston) and Lisa Armitige, Heartland National TB Center. #SATX #Texas #TRAC w/ The National Institutes of Health, Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences at The University of Texas Health Science Center San Antonio, UTSA College of Sciences, UT Southwestern Medical Center, Baylor College of Medicine Learn more and register here --> https://lnkd.in/ggbkrXCx

Members of Texas Biomed's Community Outreach Club recently volunteered at the Texas Diaper Bank, which collects donations of diapers for babies, feminine products for women and adult diapers for seniors. It is rewarding to give back to the #SATX community and #volunteer as a team!

Texas Biomed Professor Smriti Mehra and her team are investigating a therapy for #tuberculosis that is already helping fight #cancer. The therapy involves briefly inhibiting an immune system protein called IDO. Since many people with #HIV can be susceptible to other infections like TB, it is important to know if inhibiting IDO affects antiretroviral therapy. This preclinical study is an important step towards human clinical trials. #TB #preclinical #biomedical #research https://lnkd.in/g5CXUCAx

What's the key to success? Investing in people. Butter tortillas are also a plus. 😊 We are so grateful H-E-B President Craig Boyan, who is also Chair of Texas Biomed's Board, was able to take time today to speak to our entire team at our Fall "State of the Institute." He shared insights into H-E-B's approach to leadership, culture and community. It was truly inspiring to hear what it takes to grow a beloved business that is so committed to making a positive impact on the community. And it really is this simple: People First. "We are a people company that happens to sell groceries," explained Craig. It is also wonderful to share such a deep commitment to science and keeping people healthy. 🙌 A big thank you to H-E-B for donating mugs and snacks for our team members! We ❤️ H-E-B!
