Yesterday our member railroad Watco Companies LLC hosted officials from around the Corpus Christi area at their Texas Coastal Bend Railroad facility in the Port Corpus Christi complex. Guests were able to learn about the distinction between classes of railroads, the role that shortlines and mainlines play in rail transportation, how a multimodal set up benefits businesses, consumers, and communities, and the economic impact of the port to the region. Guests even got to take a look inside one of the TCBR's locomotives! A few fun facts from yesterday. The TCBR interchanges with all three Class I railroads that operate in Texas. The TCBR carries everything from energy products and grain to aggregates and military equipment helping to onload and offload missions via military sealift capabilities. The Port of Corpus Christi was once one of the largest cotton ports in the country and still plays a crucial role in the agriculture supply chain shipping foodstuffs as far away as Asia and Africa. Over the last 8 months, the TCBR handled over 170-unit grain trains, over 19,000 rail carloads and the equivalent of over 78,000 semi-trucks. Grain came from as far away as Colorado, Memphis, the Yucatan, and southern Mexico. Efforts are currently underway to dredge the ship channel and make it the deepest port channel on the gulf coast. The dredged material is being transplated into the Nueces River delta to help restore local wetlands. This isn't a transfer of polluted material either as the port and its partners take environmental stewardship very seriously. The water used by the Texas State Aquarium to house a variety of sealife from around the world comes from the port's ship channel. Shout out to the team at the Texas Coastal Bend Railroad, Watco Companies LLC, the Port Corpus Christi, GoRail, and McGuireWoods LLP for putting this together! And thanks to the City Of Robstown, City of Corpus Christi, Texas Department of Transportation, San Patricio County, Corpus Christi Regional Economic Development Corporation, City of Portland, Texas, and everyone else who joined yesterday!

New project between our member railroad BNSF Railway and Third Coast to expand rail operations in City of Pearland, Texas. The company will add 40 rail-car spots inside the plant’s fence line to be completed in second-quarter 2025. Following the expansion, Third Coast will have space for more than 125 rail cars on site. "Our Pearland operations remain a cornerstone of Third Coast's manufacturing base, and these investments will allow us to continue serving the fast-growing U.S. Gulf Coast chemical industry," said Third Coast CEO Jim Clawson.
