About us
The Texas State Aquarium (TSA) is a private, not-for-profit 501(c)(3) wildlife conservation-focused institution. Established in 1990 and designated as the official Aquarium of Texas, the Texas State Aquarium is ranked among the top 5 best aquariums in the nation by USA Today's 10Best Readers' Choice Awards. Each year, it attracts over 600,000 visitors, showcasing the sights, sounds, and vibrant wildlife of the Caribbean and South Texas Gulf Coast. As a non-profit, the Aquarium relies on support from admissions, donors, and members to further its mission of education and wildlife conservation. Operating since 1995, the Aquarium's Wildlife Rescue Program is the only one in Texas licensed to care for injured mammals, sea turtles, shorebirds, and raptors. It has successfully released 4,450 animals back into their natural habitats. In March 2023, with support from numerous donors, the Port Corpus Christi Center for Wildlife Rescue opened, featuring vital science and technology, including Texas's only wildlife CT scan machine and an emergency deployable field stabilization system. Dedicated to workforce development, the Aquarium reached 30,487 students in 2023, spanning primary to graduate education. The Flint Hills Resources Center for Excellence in STEM Education integrates best practices from education, research, and industry to advance STEM learning in South Texas and beyond. The Wildlife Response Operations Center (WROC) at the Texas State Aquarium is a formalized framework for emergency response along the Texas Gulf Coast. The first of its kind in the country, it leads disaster and wildlife response planning, training, and operations. WROC partners include Texas Parks & Wildlife, Texas General Land Office, Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi, Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ), National Park Service, the U.S. Coast Guard, Port of Corpus Christi, and the Texas State Aquarium.

The Aquarium’s sea turtle hospital at the Center for Wildlife Rescue is now a temporary home to endangered corals as part of our ongoing partnership with the Harte Research Institute for Gulf of Mexico Studies at Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi. While our sea turtle hospital continues to save endangered sea turtles, we’re expanding our efforts to protect these vital coral species and support critical conservation research.
🛫 Corals on a Mission! 💙 Two weeks ago, nearly 300 corals, including two endangered species, took flight across the Gulf of Mexico on a mission to save our oceans. From Florida’s coral nurseries to the Texas coast, these corals will now be part of groundbreaking research and genetic safekeeping for their populations. This collaboration between Nova Southeastern University, Texas State Aquarium, and HRI is helping safeguard coral biodiversity, with a focus on resilience in the face of climate change. Yesterday, we joined Coastal Bend leaders and supporters at Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi's (TAMUCC) State of the University! We are honored to partner with TAMUCC through our Wildlife Response Operations Center (WROC), housed at the Aquarium’s Center for Wildlife Rescue. The WROC serves as a critical resource for monitoring and managing wildlife emergency response activities in South Texas and along the Texas Gulf Coast. TAMUCC's support of the WROC, with their TAMU-CC Autonomy Research Institute—one of seven FAA-designated Unmanned Aircraft System Test Sites—further strengthens our efforts to enhance Texas wildlife resiliency. We look forward to continuing collaboration alongside the Harte Research Institute for Gulf of Mexico Studies (HRI) at TAMUCC on key initiatives including coral health and propagation research and activities promoting education during Shark Week. In 2024, we're celebrating 10 years of our Caring for Our Coast program! We are proud of our partnerships with local organizations and the positive impact we've made together in Corpus Christi! In collaboration with amazing organizations, including the Corpus Christi Parks & Recreation, Gulf of Mexico Alliance, National Recreation and Park Association, Texas State Aquarium, Friends of Padre, and Coastal Bend Bays & Estuaries Program we've achieved: ☘ 3,874 plants planted 🌳 6,373 acres restored ♻ More than 109k lbs. of trash removed 👉 This was possible with the help of more than 3,900 volunteers who donated over 12k work hours in 78 events. Advancing our mission through the Port Corpus Christi Center for Wildlife Rescue at the Texas State Aquarium highlights the importance of our continued partnership with Port Corpus Christi. Water from our bay is tested at least twice daily to ensure the highest quality for the health and safety of all animals in our exhibits. Beyond maintaining water quality, our dedicated staff work to rescue and rehabilitate injured or ill Texas wildlife at the Center for Wildlife Rescue, preparing them for release back into their natural habitat.
