Texas Agriculture Matters!
About us
The Texas Legislature established the Texas Department of Agriculture (TDA) in 1907. The agency's key objectives are to promote production agriculture, consumer protection, economic development and healthy living. The agriculture commissioner oversees the agency and is elected every four years. The current commissioner, Sid Miller, was first elected in 2014 and reelected in 2018 and 2022. TDA is a diversified state agency that provides value-added services through our regulatory and marketing and initiatives. TDA is headquartered in Austin and has five regional service offices, two sub-offices, three laboratories and five livestock export facilities. TDA’s mission is to partner with all Texans to make Texas the nation's leader in agriculture, fortify our economy, empower rural communities, promote healthy lifestyles, and cultivate winning strategies for rural, suburban and urban Texas through exceptional service and the common threads of agriculture in our daily lives.

Farming and ranching contribute billions of dollars yearly to the national economy on the local, state, and federal levels. In 2022, Texas generated approximately $30 billion in agricultural cash receipts, with the highest-valued commodities being cattle and calves, dairy products, and poultry. Dollars generated by the food and fiber sector power local economies, from farmers markets to agricultural supplies purchased locally. The agricultural sector also is a consistent creator of jobs. As farmers and ranchers modernize operations to include greater use of technology, STEM jobs proliferate, providing increasing economic opportunity #TexasAgricultureMatters #NationalFarmersDay

“Our great farmers don’t just feed us—their hard work feeds our economy and helps create a prosperous and healthy future for our nation. They never take a day off, but we can give them a day to be remembered and appreciated.” - Commissioner Sid Miller Today, on National Farmer’s Day, Texas Agriculture Commissioner Sid Miller urges Texans to remember and appreciate the men and women whose hard work puts food on our table and clothes on our backs—the American farmer and rancher. This day celebrates the tremendous economic contributions of farmers and ranchers not just in Texas, but across the nation. #TexasAgricultureMatters #NationalFarmersDay
