September 11th carries immense meaning for Americans...as it should. As a 48 year old, it has become the "I remember where I was" moment for my generation. It was a call to action for many and invokes a wide spectrum of emotions for many different people; anger, guilt, loss, and a multitude of others.
Sadly, it is also one of the last times I truly felt a sense of unity and patriotism in our country. On a personal level, it was a driving force that led me away from public education, into Law Enforcement, and ultimately into the world of security contracting.
The events that occurred domestically on this day in 2001 will always be one of the seminal moments in our Nation's history.
There is another important, yet seldom discussed, seminal moment that occurred on this day. As previous mentioned Sept. 11th means many things for many people. For those that have or did operate in the security contracting world, there is another story that we must also Never Forget.
Today is the 12 year mark of the attack on a US Diplomatic outpost in Benghazi, Libya that took the lives of a US Ambassador, one of his staffers, and two US Security contractors.
As we each reflect on the meaning of this day and honor all those that lost their lives in the 2001 attacks and the subsequent war on terror, I simply ask that you add four names to your thoughts...
US Ambassador Chris Stevens
US State Department Staffer Sean Smith
Security Contractor Tyrone Woods
Security Contractor Glen Doherty
Wishing you all a meaningful day...
