This week, The Arc of Southside was honored to stand alongside the Governor of Virginia Glenn Youngkin and fellow advocates from The Arc of Virginia, as he signed legislation that will improve the lives of people with developmental disabilities. HB1963/SB945 will give people greater "buying power" to invest in technology and supports to live more independent and autonomous lives, and HB1554/SB943 will guarantee that there is an identified Transition Coordinator in every public high school to assist students with future planning. Thank you to everyone who advocated for these bills by making phone calls, sending emails, and talking to your legislators. And thank you to our local representatives Delegates Les Adams and Danny Marshall and Senator Bill Stanley and Senator Frank Ruff for their support of these bills. Together we can positively impact the lives of people with developmental disabilities. #ALifeLikeYours #AchieveWithUs #ddawareness2023 #advocacymatters #TheArc

About us
The Arc of Southside is a local chapter of The Arc of Virginia and The Arc of the US, founded in 1954 to serve individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities. The Arc of Southside has changed dramatically over the past several years, shifting from a traditional facility-based model to an inclusive community-based model of support, currently serving over 100 adults and children in Danville, VA and the surrounding area. Driven by a passion to meet the needs of individuals with developmental disabilities striving for a fully inclusive life in the community, The Arc of Southside provides fully inclusive and person-centered residential, recreational, vocational, and transitional services. We are a diverse team of dedicated individuals who are passionate about serving and empowering children and adults to live their most fulfilling and independent lives. We live by a Person First, Person Centered value system to create meaningful lives for the people we serve and each other. In hiring, we look for candidates that have the fundamental belief that people with disabilities are worthy of respect, are a strong fit with our culture, and bring the talent and experience required by the position. Our employees are dedicated to assisting those served in becoming a part of their community, while being an advocate for change by breaking down societal barriers and actively working to change negative perceptions. We offer a positive, team-oriented work environment with opportunity for professional growth and continuous learning, flexible hours, and the chance to make an impact on someone’s life.

Join us in advocating for SSI limits to be raised.
The SSI asset limit of $2,000 was set in 1989 when gas was only $1 per gallon! Gas prices have TRIPLED since then, yet SSI asset limits remain unchanged. We know this deeply impacts people with disabilities who rely on SSI to pay for necessities like food and rent. During a breakout session at the Disability Policy Seminar, we are learning about the current efforts to update outdated SSI policies. You can help lead the charge by taking action from home. Take 30 seconds to use our simple form and send a message to Congress telling them to #UpdateSSI: https://lnkd.in/eHeQN3Vc #DPS2024

There’s a reason you don’t often see great disability support staff.
