Yesterday a Singapore Airlines aircraft experienced “severe turbulence” as it flew en route from London to Singapore. It resulted in the death of one man, suspected to have had a heart attack, and the hospitalisation of a number of those onboard. William Hallowell interviewed aviation academic and former cabin crew manager Ivan Stevenson about what exactly “severe turbulence” is - and the implications of the incident for safety onboard commercial aircraft.
