Greetings Family,   I want to extend a greeting of peace to all reflecting on Indigenous Peoples Day. I am reflecting on and honoring the indigenous ancestors who occupied the lands across this country.  It is beautiful that some in this country recognize Indigenous Peoples Day. I was in conversation with a group about Indigenous Peoples Day and Columbus Day and the inconspicuous designation by some companies to state “that we are closed for the holiday,” with no specificity as to who or what is being celebrated.   There is a saying, “If nothing changes, nothing changes.” As a country, we hide from the truth that will uncover Whiteness, thus denying our humanity. Columbus was not worthy of celebration, and the myth of his discovery of America needs to end. To do this, as Americans, we have to step into our humanity to acknowledge history, its impact, and how history shows up in each of us.   In this case, changing the name of or adding a name to an existing holiday only provides for the duality of living in two worlds, one of truth and the other of falsehood. This duality seems to be a perpetual dual consciousness that has been sewn into the fabric of this country and continues to keep us stuck and turned away from our humanity.   One significant step towards reclaiming our shared humanity is to discontinue the celebration of Columbus Day and instead choose another day to honor Indigenous Peoples. This change will allow us to proudly and loudly declare our respect and honor for Indigenous Peoples.   -Kevin B. Baker, M.A., M.Ed.   P.S. READI2B represents a paradigm shift, offering a holistic approach that prioritizes race equity as a foundational element. Race Equity is essential, it is the response to organizational and societal culture that promotes institutional and systemic racism. Access and accessibility issues are a critical focus for liberation and breaking the binds of white supremacy, especially for those with physical disabilities, mental disabilities, and other invisible disabilities. Diversity should not only be about people in organizations looking and presenting differently, (i.e., different ethnicities, genders, gender identities, sexual orientations, ages, social classes, physical abilities, and other identities). Embracing Intersectionality and Inclusion is paramount. It's about recognizing how our various identities intersect, influencing power dynamics in our interactions. Belonging happens when all the above are met. Belonging provides a feeling of acceptance and security within a group or organization. Are you READI2B Aligned? "We all sit at the intersection of multiple identities and multiple systems of power, and that fact has real implications for our everyday experiences and well-being." — Dr. Skyler Jackson Creating an inclusive environment means understanding these complexities and ensuring everyone has the opportunity to thrive. We are committed to fostering spaces where employees and clients alike feel valued, respected, and empowered to bring their full selves to the table. Let's continue working towards a world where differences are celebrated, and every intersection is acknowledged with care and equity. As we continue to unravel the complex web of power dynamics in the workplace, it becomes clear that intersectional challenges require intersectional solutions. At Baker Consulting, we're not just Organizational Culture consultants – we're your strategic partners in the complex game of workplace equity. By recognizing the multifaceted nature of our identities and the ways they shape our professional experiences, we can begin to create workplaces that are truly equitable and inclusive for all.

Ever felt like invisible forces shape your professional journey? Intersectionality—a concept introduced by Kimberlé Crenshaw—explains how aspects like race, gender, and class combine to create unique workplace experiences. For professionals like Maria Gonzalez, a Latina in a white male-dominated field, these layers of identity aren’t just about discrimination—they represent a complex reality that impacts career progression. Data proves the struggle is real. Black women are 58% less likely to have their ideas endorsed compared to white men, showing how race and gender intersect in professional spaces. To combat this, companies need to: 1. Educate on intersectionality. 2. Reform policies with an intersectional lens. 3. Foster inclusive communities for mutual support. Only by embracing this complexity can we build truly inclusive workplaces. Check our latest blog post, The Intersectional Workplace: Illuminating Complexities, Forging Equitable Futures by Kevin B.
