Empowering an abundant life through advancing financial literacy and opportunity for the African-American community

About us

The Bernard Garrett Sr. Foundation was established to continue the legacy of economic freedom through advancing financial literacy and opportunity for African-Americans. Bernard Garrett Sr was the first African-American man to build a banking and real estate empire during the height of the racial divide in America. He built a legacy that continues to inspire today. There are many great African-American entrepreneurs, owners, developers, financiers, and investors waiting for their potential to be tapped. In the United States, 44 million African-Americans account for 13% of the U.S. population and have a significant impact on the economy, with $1.2 trillion in annual purchases. With a 38% financial literacy rate, financial well-being of African-Americans lags that of the U.S. population as a whole. The reasons for these gaps are complex, but one area of importance in addressing them is increased financial literacy, as well as increased opportunity in finance. We believe that partnering with the best organizations - that bring together resources, expertise, and vision – can identify issues, find answers, and drive change. Our Mission: Within a generation, lift African-American financial literacy rates from 38% to 50%. Within a generation, increase African-American employment in finance. Within a generation, see African-Americans create generational wealth.
