Join the Chazen Museum of Art this Thursday, October 3, from 5-7 pm for the “Nordic Utopia? African Americans in the 20th Century” exhibition celebration. This exhibition showcases some of the love, adventure, and educational opportunities that African American artists pursued when they traveled to Nordic countries at the beginning of the 20th century. The celebration will feature a jazz performance by The Dexter Gordon Tribute Band and remarks from exhibition co-curators Professor Ethelene Whitmire and Leslie Anderson. Parallel to our mission here at The Center, help us celebrate artistic excellence and cultural exchanges across the Black community. The 5th Annual Black Women’s Leadership Conference, hosted by @Center4blkwomen, is taking place August 20th at Breese Stevens Field. This conference focuses on teaching the importance of wellness, leadership and connections in everyday life, as well as giving attendees the tools to become empowered Black women.     At The Center for Black Excellence and Culture, we aim to help inspire Black women and cultivate a space where we can also encourage future Black leaders. #TheBlackCenter #Madison #BlackExcellence

We are awed and inspired by the newly unveiled sculpture of Vel Phillips outside of the Wisconsin State Capitol – the first sculpture of a Black woman on state capitol grounds in the country. Vel Phillips, a civil rights activist, helped change the trajectory of Wisconsin. Phillips was the first Black woman to graduate from UW–Madison Law School, become a judge in Wisconsin, be a member of the Milwaukee Common Council, and become elected to statewide office as Wisconsin’s Secretary of State. At The Center, we hope this inspires future leaders and harnesses the importance of representation and recognition to encourage Black excellence. #TheBlackCenter #Madison #BlackExcellence
